Hollywood Burbank Airport, in California, faced an unprecedented collapse this Monday (6) when it was left without flight controllers for almost six hours, as a result of the administrative shutdown of the United States government. The operation had to be temporarily transferred to a control center around 200 kilometers away, causing average delays of more than two hours on dozens of flights.

The crisis occurred between 4:15 pm and 10 pm (local time), a period in which the airport operated without staff in the control tower. California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized former President Donald Trump, blaming him for the budget impasse that paralyzed part of the federal government.

“Thank you, @realDonaldTrump! Burbank airport has ZERO flight controllers because of YOUR government shutdown,” he quipped in an X post.

The United States is experiencing the second week of the so-called shutdowncaused by the lack of agreement between Republicans and Democrats on the federal budget. With the strike, hundreds of thousands of public servants were laid off, while those considered essential continue to work, but temporarily without receiving a salary.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the delays at Burbank and reported staffing shortages at other western airports. In a statement, the airport management reported that operations at the terminal continued partially and recommended passengers to check the status of their flights before heading to the location.
