In an unconventional political act, the president of Argentina Javier Milei took the stage on Monday night (6) in Buenos Aires to sing Argentine rock classics, such as songs by Charly García and Los Ratones Paranoicos. Dressed in a leather jacket and surrounded by fireworks, the president declared at the end: “I’m going to take a shower and dress like the president.”
The event, presented as the launch of the book The Making of the Miracleoccurred amid strong political and economic stress on the government. Argentina is facing high inflation, a drop in presidential popularity and new corruption scandals involving allies of Milei and his sister, Karina Milei, general secretary of the Presidency.
In recent days, José Luis Espert, the government’s main candidate for deputy for Buenos Aires, resigned following suspicions of links with a businessman accused of drug trafficking in the USA. The episode occurs while Economy Minister Luis Caputo is negotiating an American financial aid package in Washington to contain the crisis.
Analysts see the show as an attempt by Milei to “recover the mystique” that brought him to power in 2023, especially among young voters. “It was a gesture to reinforce the most loyal core of supporters, at a time of loss of political momentum”, said Lara Goyburu, from the consultancy Management & Fit.
Recent polls indicate that 53.7% of Argentines disapprove of the government, the worst rate since taking office. Despite the drop in inflation — projected at 28% for 2025 — wages remain stagnant, the cost of living soars and unemployment is a concern.
Critics, such as former minister Ricardo López Murphy, accused Milei of insensitivity. “Go back to planet Earth, president. The country needs you here,” he wrote on social media.
