Dina Boluarte was dismissed for “moral incapacity”, amid accusations of corruption and illicit enrichment. President of Congress, José Jerí, should occupy the position of interim president until the next elections.
The president of Peru’s Congress, the right-wing José Jerí, assumed the role of interim president of the country in the early hours of this Friday (10/10), following the lightning dismissal this Thursday of President Dina Boluarte, the first woman to hold the position.
She was dismissed by Congress, abruptly ending her term of two years and ten months and far from fulfilling her promise to pacify the country, marked by harshly repressed protests, deaths and corruption scandals.
The Peruvian parliament swore in Jerí as head of state until the next general elections, called for April 2026, as determined by the Constitution when the president does not have a vice president. In Boluarte’s case, she was the vice-president of the leftist Pedro Castillo, also dismissed at the end of 2022.
Jerí, 38 years old, has been president of the Peruvian Congress since August, after arriving at parliament as a substitute congressman in the 2021 elections, replacing former president Martín Vizcarra, who had been the parliamentarian with the most votes, but was unable to take his seat because he was prevented from doing so by Congress.

History of the crisis
Boluarte is the fourth head of government in the country to be removed by the Legislature this century, after the cases of Martín Vizcarra, Pedro Castillo and Alberto Fujimori.
Congress decided to remove Boluarte, arguing a “permanent moral incapacity” to face growing insecurity and the rise of organized crime.
The former president did not appear in the plenary to exercise her right to defense, which led Jerí to announce the decision to continue with the impeachment process.
Peru is experiencing waves of demonstrations, mainly in Puno and Juliaca, where clashes with repression forces have caused dozens of deaths. The Public Ministry proposes to investigate the former president and some ministers for genocide.
The crisis in the country worsened with the “Rolexgate” scandal, in 2024, over undeclared luxury watches and jewelry.
