Brazilian government condemns Israeli interception of the “Global Sumud Flotilla” and warns of violation of humanitarian law
The Brazilian government is following with concern the interception by the Israeli navy of vessels from the “Global Sumud Flotilla”, which are attended by Brazilian citizens, including parliamentarians.
Faced with the first news of the arrest of Brazilian nationals aboard flotilla vessels, including federal deputy Luizianne Lins, Brazil recalls the principle of freedom of navigation in international waters and highlights the peaceful nature of the flotilla.
The Brazilian government deplores the military action of the Israeli government, which violates rights and puts the physical integrity of peaceful protesters at risk. In the context of this reprehensible military operation, it becomes Israel’s responsibility for the safety of those detained.
In this context, it reiterates its call for the immediate and unconditional lifting of all Israeli restrictions on the entry and distribution of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip, in line with Israel’s obligations, as an occupying power, in light of international humanitarian law.
The Brazilian Embassy in Tel Aviv is in permanent contact with the Israeli authorities, in order to provide appropriate consular assistance to nationals, as established by the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
