Federal deputy Luizianne Lins (PT-CE) was one of the people detained during the interception by the Israeli military of the Global Sumud Flotilla vessels, this Wednesday (1), in international waters. The mission sought to bring food, water and medical supplies to the Gaza Strip, participating in an international coalition with ships from different countries.

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), stated that he called Itamaraty to mediate with Israeli authorities and ensure that the parliamentarian has her parliamentary rights respected. During the legislative session, Motta declared that he would seek “all diplomatic support” for Luizianne to regain her freedom and integrity.

Federal deputies from opposition parties also sent a letter to President Lula and the top diplomat demanding urgent action. In the document, they state that delays in measures could result in tragedies and that Brazil must reaffirm its sovereign stance and defense of human rights.

The Itamaraty, in turn, released a statement stating that it follows the case “with concern” and that it considers Israel’s action a violation of the rights of peaceful protesters. According to the ministry, the safety of detained Brazilians is now the responsibility of the Israeli State.

The interception was part of a larger action: at least 12 Brazilians were detained in the episode, including activists such as Thiago Ávila. Israel confirmed that ships were “safely stopped” and that passengers would be transferred to the country’s ports. The flotilla had previously suffered drone attacks and intimidation measures while sailing towards Gaza.
