A resident said the five and six -year -old children, “now live with fear” after their release
The Israeli forces placed two Palestinian children on Monday in custody under suspicion of “espionage” in the old town of Hebron, located south of the occupied West Bank.
The five and six -year -old children were maintained for 30 minutes before being released after the intervention of Palestinian residents and foreign activists.
The Israeli forces detained the children claiming that they were spying on a house occupied by an Israeli settler.
The local news agency Wafa reported that the Palestinian children were playing soccer close to home.
Speaking to Anadoli Agency, Badr Al-Tami, a resident of the Ain Al-Askar neighborhood, near the Ibrahimi mosque, said the children were panicked during the incident, adding that they “are now living in fear.”
“The occupation forces were carrying out renovation works in a house that had recently taken,” he explained, expressing shock with the accusations made against the two children.
“The children unconsciously stayed in front of the house while the door was open. Occupation forces claimed that it was espionage.”
In a clip that circulates online, the two children can be seen crying as they held their hands on each other during the detention by an armed Israeli soldier.
Another video shows residents surrounded by Israeli forces as they tried to argue with them, but they were just ignored.
The UN Human Rights Office in occupied Palestine said that the detention of children demonstrates the “cruel daily realities of Palestinians” in an X publication.
“The rights of Palestinian children to life, health, education, movement and other rights are denied daily. Every day, children are killed, injured or arbitrarily detained by Israeli forces in occupied Palestinian territory (TPO),” the statement added.
Palestinians in busy territory have long been subject to severe restrictions, gathering touches and arrests.
Since genocide in Gaza began almost two years ago, the siege in West Bank has only increased, with mass arrests and detention campaigns becoming an almost daily reality for Palestinians, including children.
More than 20,000 children have been killed by Israeli attacks in Gaza since October 2023.
