Good September for the labor market. Employment accelerated last month, with about 31,500 more than media workers affiliated with Social Security, the highest registration for this month except those of 2020 and 2021, due to the Pandemia. On the side of unemployment there are two other good news: the unemployment recorded in almost 5,000 people was reduced, when in September it is usual to increase their number, and Spain has also reached a new historical maximum of social protection of unemployed people, of 82.5%.



They are some of the most relevant data of the figures published this Thursday on the affiliation to social security and the registered strike, of unemployed persons pointed out in the public employment offices. Spain is touching maximum employment, with the last roof achieved last July, 21.86 million workers. In September, the total number of workers reached 21.7 million people affiliated with media social security.



Employment creation accelerated significantly in September, a month in which a lot of employment is recovered in the education sector, after summer holidays, while affiliated in activities such as hospitality and trade with the end of the tourist season. In 2025 these trends have been maintained, with 64,000 workers more education, 35,000 less in hospitality and -45,000 in the trade, while some activities that have also presented a better behavior, such as the self -employed regime (+7,500 workers) and the construction, with 3,800 more employees in the general regime (compared to 1,600 in 2024 and 1,000 in 2023) and others Autonomous (twice the last two years), among others.

The result – also by 2024 with modest records – is an increase in the year -on -year employment creation, which increases to 2.4% compared to 2.25% in August, at the beginning of the year. In absolute terms, it implies the creation of half a million jobs in the last twelve months.



In unstacted terms, the metric that isolates the seasonal fluctuations of the labor market, there is also the greatest dynamism of employment, with 56,700 workers affiliated with Social Security, facing the 30,000 of the last two months.

“We are growing in quantity, but also in quality in employment,” said the Minister of Social Security, Elma Saiz, with less temporary employment and also better salary, which is reflected in an increase in the quotation bases of the “23.4%” since 2019. At a time when Vox and the PP are intensifying their anti -immigration speeches, Minister Elma Elma Saiz has stressed that much of the job created It corresponds to foreign workers, with 20,000 more affiliates in September than in the previous month and 200,000 more in interannual terms.



Fall in unemployment and social protection record

Unemployment, still one of the main pending tasks of the labor market in Spain for its high records, also had especially positive behavior last month. The total unemployed persons registered in the offices of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) has decreased by 4,846 people in September compared to the previous month. This is the first time that unemployment descends this month since 2007, again except for the pandemic period.



“They are not just figures, they are people, they are families that today breathe calmer,” the Second Vice President and Minister of Labor, Yolanda Díaz, held on Thursday. “Spain is better. We continue beating unemployment reduction record. And most importantly, we do it with rights and guaranteeing decent working conditions,” the vice president has proclaimed in an assessment of unemployment data sent to the media.

Thus, the total registered stops stood in September at 2,421,665, at 2008 levels, before the great increase in the past financial crisis. In the last year, unemployment descends in 153,620 people (-6%) “well above, for example, of economic growth rates” (3%), stand out in the Ministry of Yolanda Díaz.



In addition, work highlights the historical social protection record of unemployed people, which stood at 82.5% in August, the last month available in this statistic. The beneficiaries of protection at the end of the month were 1,875,821, 1.6% more than last year, of which some 963,500 received the contributory benefit and the rest, subsidies.
