President was the first to speak at the UN Assembly
In speaking at the opening of the United Nations General Assembly (UN), President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva criticized the unilateral sanctions of the United States stating that the world assists the increased authoritarianism.
“Multilateralism is facing a new crossroads. The authority of this organization [ONU] It’s in check. We watched the consolidation of an international disorder marked by following concessions the policy of power, attacking sovereignty, arbitrary sanctions. And unilateral interventions are becoming a rule. ”
For Lula, there is “evident parallel” between the multilateralism crisis and the weakening of democracy. “Authoritarianism is strengthened when we omit in the face of arbitrariness. When international society falters in defense of peace, sovereignty and law, the consequences are tragic.”
“Worldwide, undemocratic forces try to subdue institutions and suffocate freedoms. They worship violence. They exalt ignorance. They act as physical and digital militias and surround the press. Even under unprecedented attacks, Brazil chose to resist and defend their democracy, reconquited 40 years ago by their people after two decades of dictatorial governments.”
Sanction
Lula referred to the economic sanctions applied by the Government of Donald Trump to Brazil that imposed a 50% rate on national products imported by the US. He also criticized attempts at interference in the Brazilian judiciary.
To try to take the Federal Supreme Court (STF) of condemning former President Jair Bolsonaro for coup d’état, Trump imposed the magnitsky law on Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case.
Magnitsky law is a mechanism provided for in US legislation used to unilaterally punish alleged human rights violators abroad. Among other points, the measure blocks goods and companies from the targets of the Sanction in the US.
The US government also canceled the visa of several court ministers, including Gilmar Mendes, Carmen Lúcia, Flavio Dino, Cristiano Zanin, Dias Toffoli, Luis Roberto Barroso and Edson Fachin.
Yesterday (22), the US government announced sanctions to the wife of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, lawyer Viviane Barci de Moraes. The Brazilian government reacted by claiming to have received the news with deep indignation and noting that the country “will not bend this aggression.”
