American Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on Jair Bolsonaro’s conviction for the Supreme Court (STF) and said the US government will give “response to the height.”
In a post at X, Rubio repeated US President Donald Trump, classifying the lawsuit against Bolsonaro from “Witch Hunt.”
“Political persecution by human rights violator and the target of sanctions Alexandre de Moraes continue, while he and others in the Supreme Court of Brazil have unjustly decided to arrest former President Jair Bolsonaro. The United States will respond to this witches hunt,” Rubio said.
Itamaraty responded to Rubio’s publication by saying that threats “will not intimidate” Brazilian democracy.
“The Brazilian judiciary judged, with independence that assures the 1988 Constitution, the first accused by the failed attempt to coup d’état, which had a broad right of defense. Brazilian democratic institutions gave their response to coup,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the X wrote.
“We will continue to defend the sovereignty of the country of aggression and attempts to interference, come from where they come,” continued the folder.
“Threats such as the one done today by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in a manifestation that attacks Brazilian authority and ignores the facts and the blunt evidence of the case, will not intimidate our democracy,” concluded Itamaraty in its demonstration.
Previously, Donald Trump had commented on the result of the trial in Brazil when asked by a reporter while boarding the presidential helicopter in the White House garden.
The American leader said he met Bolsonaro well, said the result of the trial is “surprising” and compared the case to the situation he himself went after the riots of January 6, 2021 in Washington, DC
“As a foreign leader, I think he was a good president. It’s very surprising that this could happen,” he said.
“It’s very similar to what they tried to do with me, but they didn’t get it at all,” he said.
Trump had already harshly criticized Brazil and the Lula administration because of the alleged unfair treatment given to its Bolsonaro ally.
In July, he ordered 50% rates for Brazilian products exported to the US, in addition to sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes, the case rapporteur judge, and the revocation of visas for most members of the Supreme.
“Well, I don’t know … We’re talking about things that make us very disappointed with Brazil. We apply very high rates because of what they are doing, something very unfortunate,” Trump said last week.
We have a great relationship with the people of Brazil, but the government has changed radically. It went to the left very intensely, very radical, and this is damaging the country seriously. Things there are going very badly. Very, very bad. So let’s see, ”he said at a news conference.
In the same wake, the United States government also applied the magnitsky law against Minister Alexandre de Moares, stating that it is “toxic to all legitimate companies and individuals seeking access to the United States and its markets.”
Therefore, new measures were expected after the judgment was completed.
