President of France chooses Sébastien Leconnu, until then Minister of Defense, to be Prime Minister. He succeeds centrist François Bayrou, who resigned after losing a motion of confidence in Parliament.
France President Emmanuel Macron appointed 39-year-old Sébastien Leconnu on Tuesday (09/09), a member of his party, Renaissance (RE), and until then Minister of Defense, as the new Prime Minister of the country.
Macron entrusted to Leconnu “the task of consulting the political forces represented in Parliament with a view to approving a national budget and the construction of essential agreements for the decisions that will be made in the coming months,” the Elisha Palace said.
One of the key factors for the option for Leconnu would be his proximity to Macron, who already wanted to name him a prime minister in December 2024, to the detriment of centrist François Bayrou, who presented his resignation on Tuesday after losing a motion of confidence in the National Assembly.
Three predecessors did not resist a year
The former member of the Central Law Party The Republicans is the seventh minister appointed by Macron during his presidency, which began in 2017, and the fifth in the second term, which began in 2022. His last three predecessors, Gabriel Attal, Michel Barnier and François Bayrou, had mandates that did not reach a year.
The last two fell into motions in the National Assembly, after a circumstantial agreement between the ultra -right Marine Le Pen and the left block.
If the new head of government does not want to end up as its two predecessors, it will have to reach a non -aggression agreement in the National Assembly, either with the Ultra -right group, or part of the progressives, at first the socialists.
In full social and economic uncertainty that France is going through, under the pressure of markets and social protests, the 2026 budget project, which should be presented in October, will be the first test of the new Prime Minister.
Leconnu, who will take over his new duties on Wednesday, should also present his ministerial office in the coming days.
