In a meeting with soybean producers, Xie Feng argued that agriculture is not used as a weapon in trade disputes between China and the United States

China’s ambassador to Washington, Xie Feng, said Beijing and Washington are able to strategically complement himself in the field of agriculture and that this area should not be used as a weapon in political disputes. The statement occurred during a breakfast with representatives of the soy industry of both countries, held in the US capital.

According to the diplomat, the weight of both economies on the world scenario makes the partnership inevitable and beneficial. “China and the US together produce almost 40% of global foods and consume a quarter of total. China has a comparative advantage in labor -intensive agricultural products, while the US specializes in land -intensive agricultural commodities through large -scale mechanized production.”said Xie.

The event was organized by the United States soybean export council in partnership with the China Chamber of Commerce for the import and export of food, native products and animal by -products, bringing together industrial associations, agribusiness companies and academic experts on both sides.

For the ambassador, the approach gains go beyond the trade balance. “Exchanges and agricultural cooperation not only offered more options for consumers in both countries, but also put more money in the pockets of US farmers.”he pointed out.

He added that Sino-American collaboration has a global impact: “They boosted transformation and agricultural modernization in China and the US and have paved a new way to ensure global food security.”.

However, Xie warned of the risks of the growing politicization of the theme. “Agriculture should not be politicized and farmers should not pay the cost of trade war”he said, in reference to commercial tensions between the two countries.

The diplomat directly criticized bills seeking to ban citizens and Chinese companies to acquire agricultural land in the United States. “Forbidding Chinese citizens and companies to buy agricultural lands is purely a maneuver of political manipulation under the pretext of national security. It is completely unfounded and aims to kidnap agricultural cooperation between China and the USA to meet the personal interests of some individuals.”he said.

Despite the difficulties, Xie sought to show a willingness to advance in the dialogue. “China is ready to work with the US to implement the important common understandings of the two leaders, make good use of the economic and commercial consultation mechanism, build consensus, clarify misunderstandings, and strengthen cooperation, in order to jointly share dividends of development and return to the right way of beneficial cooperation for all.”these.

In the ambassador’s view, it is also up to industrial associations and companies in both countries to act as a connecting link, helping to consolidate this partnership. “I hope more friends come together and that together we are ‘farmers’ who work hard to build a stable, solid and sustainable China-and-her-unit relationship.”he said.

Xie used agricultural metaphors to reinforce his appeal against political interference in the sector. “We need to keep the ‘pests’ away from bilateral agricultural cooperation and say a strong no attempt to politic and economic issues in the name of national security”these.

He concluded by highlighting the need to expand dialogue and stimulate new initiatives: “We also need to sow more ‘seeds’, work closely with commerce, industry, business and research, and strive to achieve more results in the restoration of mechanisms of dialogue and cooperation in the agricultural area.”he added.

The Chinese ambassador’s speech reinforces the importance of agriculture as a space of approximation between the two largest economies in the world, even in a scenario of political and commercial tensions.
