The attack also killed Reuters Hussam Al-Masri’s photojournalist, as well as journalists Mariam Abu Daqqa, Moaz Abu Taha and Ahmed Abu Aziz.
Five journalists, including Al Jazeera Mohammad Salama photographer, are among the 20 people killed in an Israeli attack on the Nasser Medical Complex in southern Gaza, according to the Enclave Ministry of Health.
The ministry said on Monday that the victims were killed in the fourth floor of the hospital in a double attack-a missile hit first and another moments later, when the rescue teams arrived.
Among the dead are also Hussam Al-Masri, who worked as a photojournalist for the Reuters news agency; Mariam Abu Daqqa, who worked as a journalist for various media, including The Independent Arabic and the Associated Press news agency; and journalist Moaz Abu Taha, according to the Gaza government’s press office.
A fifth journalist, Ahmed Abu Aziz, who worked for QDS Feed Network and other media, could not resist injuries, according to the Media Office statement.
“The fellow journalists were martyred when the Israeli occupation committed a horrible crime by bombing a group of journalists who were on a press coverage mission at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Youis province, and many martyrs were victims of this crime,” the press office said in a statement.
“We consider the Israeli occupation, the American administration and the countries participating in the genocide crime, such as the United Kingdom, Germany and France, fully responsible for committing these heinous and brutal crimes.”
Reuters reported that the hospital’s live video broadcast, operated by cameraman Al-Masri, was suddenly interrupted at the time of the initial attack.
‘Enter the Truth’
Al Jazeera condemned the attack as “a clear intention to hide the truth.”
“The blood of our martyred journalists in Gaza has not yet dried before the Israeli occupation forces committed another crime against Al Jazeera cameraman Mohammed Salama, along with three other photojournalists,” the network said in a statement.
“Despite the relentless attacks, Al Jazeera remains determined to provide live coverage of Israeli genocide in Gaza in the last 23 months, with occupation authorities preventing the entry of international communication vehicles to cover the war.”
Salama married another Palestinian journalist, Hala Asfour, last year, amid the genocidal war in progress.
Meanwhile, Abu Daqqa leaves a 12 -year -old son who was evacuated from Gaza at the beginning of the war, according to AP editor Abby Sewell.
“She was a real heroine, like all our Palestinians in Gaza,” Sewell said in an X post.
The journalists’ murders occurred just two weeks after the renowned Al Jazeera journalist, Anas Al-Sharif, was killed along with four of his press colleagues in front of Al-Shifa Hospital in the city of Gaza. Israel claimed that Anas, who had become the voice of Gaza for his extensive filler reports – home to more than two million people, was the target.
The attack raises the number of Palestinian journalists killed in Gaza from October 7, 2023 to at least 273, according to an Al Jazeera count.
In addition to the four killed journalists, hatem Khaled, photojournalist of Reuters, was also among the injured, the agency confirmed. Khaled extensively documented the war in Gaza for Reuters.
Israel issued a statement claiming that he had made “an attack in the Nasser Hospital area” without explaining the purpose or target of the attack. The brief statement, published on the Army’s social networks, says the military “has no journalists targeting.”
More journalists killed in Gaza than in any other great conflict
Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, said that Israel is constantly targeted as Palestinian journalists throughout the conflict.
“How many times will we continue to report the murder of our colleagues or the murder of other journalists who work for Al Jazeera and other media?” Asked Khoudary.
“I am one of the Palestinian journalists who cover hospitals. We are in a two-year war, where we have no electricity and internet, so Palestinian journalists are using these hospital services to continue their reports,” said Khoudary, reporting Deir El-Balah in downtown Gaza.
Palestinian journalists are also making hospitals their base to track stories of injured Palestinians, those facing malnutrition and all the dead, she added.
Mohamed Elmasry, Professor of Media Study at the Institute of Graduate Studies of Doha, says that Israel has learned that he can “practically do what he wants” without repercussions during the Gaza War course.
“If there is something Israel has learned in the last 23 months, it can do practically what you want and go unpunished,” he told Al Jazeera, referring to the attacks that aim and kill paramedics, humanitarian workers and journalists.
“Everything they [o exército israelense] They had to do it was issuing a statement, diverting the accusation or blaming Hamas, ”said Elmasry.“ Let’s see what they say about this [último ataque ao Hospital Nasser].
Human rights groups vehemently condemned Israel’s attacks on journalists in Gaza, where reporters face more dangers than anywhere else in the world.
“No conflict in modern history has seen a larger number of dead journalists than Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip,” said Amnesty International.
Several hospitals have been attacked or invaded throughout the Gaza range since the beginning of the war, with Israel claiming that combatants are operating from within medical facilities without providing evidence. Israeli allegations were never supported by evidence.
Israel has been accused of widespread abuse during their 22 months of brutal war in Gaza, killing more than 62,000 people, more than half of them women and children. Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant received arrest warrants for war crimes from the International Criminal Court.
