China-Camboja cooperation challenges logic of western power

Chancelers celebrate historical partnership and project cooperation for stability, safety and growth in the midst of a turbulent global scenario

Anning, in the Chinese province of Yunnan, was the scene on Thursday (14) of a high-level diplomatic meeting that reinforced the historic partnership between China and Cambodia. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi-who also is part of China’s Central Committee’s Central Committee-received Cambojan-Prime Minister and Chancellor Prak Sokhonn, amid the tenth meeting of Lancang-10 (LMC) cooperation ministers.

The dialogue between the two representatives occurred a few months after a milestone in bilateral relations. In April this year, Chinese President Xi Jinping made a state visit to Cambodia, when, according to Wang, the leaders “They jointly led the improvement of China-Camboja relations and prepared a project to build a China-Camboja community for all conditions, with a future shared in the New Age”.

Support for stability and development

Wang pointed out that Beijing maintains his commitment to support Cambodia in the preservation of political stability, stimulating economic growth and raising the living conditions of the population. The Chancellor stressed that China is willing to “Strengthen cooperation with Cambodia to bring more benefits to the Cambodian people and contribute to regional development and prosperity”.

The minister also took the opportunity to reflect on the international context. “Faced with an international scenario full of change and turmoil, the world needs peace and tranquility”he said. For Wang, there is a special symbolism in the fact that the meeting takes place in Anning – a name that, in Chinese, means “peace and tranquility.” The meeting, he said, is an opportunity for LMC countries “Discuss development plans, ask peace and build consensus on peace”.

Fighting Transfronic Crimes

Another point addressed was regional security. Wang praised the actions of the Cambodian government against digital crimes, saying that “China appreciates Cambodia’s campaign to repress online gambling and telecommunications fraud”. He added that he expects the continuity of “Strong measures” and the expansion of cooperation with neighboring countries to combat cross -border criminal activities.

Prak Sokhonn, in turn, said that Cambodia attributes high priority to the relationship with Beijing and expressed gratitude “For support and altruistic help” received. The deputy minister said he hoped that, with this reinforced partnership, “The level of cooperation is increased and more fruitful results are achieved”.

Regional stability and integration

Cambodian representative reiterated that his country is “Totally committed to peace efforts” and demonstrated optimism that the meeting of ministers contributes to “Accelerate Lancang-10 cooperation and promote regional prosperity and stability”.

Wang took advantage of the dialogue to deal with the relationships between Cambodia and Thailand, noting that “Both Cambodia and Thailand are good neighbors and friends from China” and arguing that the parties “Increase engagement and restore mutual trust”. He also stated that Beijing believes in the ability of the countries involved in solving their differences “Through dialogue and consultation” and reiterated support to ASEAN to “Maintain solidarity” of the block.

Prak Sokhonn also informed the recent situation between Cambodia and Thailand and thanked “China’s active efforts to promote peace negotiations and the relief of tensions”.
