President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva again defended, on Tuesday, 12, the discussion about the creation of a new BRICS currency focused on trade between the bloc countries. In an interview with São Paulo, Lula stated that the proposal seeks to reduce the dependence of the dollar and expand alternatives of economic integration.

Proposal context

At the BRICS summit held in July in Rio de Janeiro, the president had already advocated commercial operations among members without the intermediation of the US currency. According to Lula, the new currency would not be intended to replace the dollar on a global scale, but to function as an alternative in the group’s internal transactions.

The president also recalled the agreement signed in 2004 with Argentina, which allowed settlements in reais and weights, as an example that similar experiences have already been tested. For him, such changes face initial resistance, but may change the dynamics of international trade in the long run.

International repercussion and criticism

The proposal gained prominence after statements by former US President Donald Trump, who accused Brics of trying to “destroy” the dollar. The Republican threatened to apply 10% tariff over products from the bloc countries.

Trump’s comment occurred amid the devaluation of the American currency, which ended the day quoted at R $ 5,3870 – the lowest level since June 2024. Analysts evaluate that such unilateral measures can intensify the search movement for foreign exchange alternatives within BRICS.

Economists, however, warn of obstacles. The creation of a common currency would require financial integration, macroeconomic stability and trust among countries. In addition, experiences such as the euro indicate that processes of this size demand years of negotiation and deep adjustments of monetary sovereignty.

Feasibility and next steps

According to experts heard by Estadãothe project would need clear multilateral agreements and defined governance parameters, such as issuance criteria, ballast and rules of use.

Lula stated that he was open to the dialogue and said he intends to hear concrete proposals from other leaders at the next block meeting. The theme is expected to be officially included in future negotiations.

Conclusion

Lula’s defense about the creation of a BRICS currency It is part of the broader debate on alternatives to the hegemony of the dollar in international trade. Although the proposal has strong political appeal, its viability depends on complex negotiations and deep alignment between the member countries.
