Country has climbing episodes of physical, psychological and sexual aggression in the family environment, with 256,000 identified victims. Women are the main affected.
Germany recorded a historical record of domestic violence cases in 2024, according to data from the Federal Department of Criminal Police released on Saturday (02/08) by the German newspaper Welt AM Sonntag.
In all, 256,942 people were victims of physical, sexual or psychological violence practiced in the domestic or family environment.
The number represents an increase of 14% in the last five years and 3.7% compared to 2023. In practice, a person suffers some kind of aggression every two minutes in the country.
According to experts, however, not all occurrences are even reported, indicating that the actual amount of victims may be even higher.
Most cases involve abuses committed by partners or former partner, which totaled almost 171,100 records in 2024-1.9% more than the previous year. Intrafamily violence, which includes aggressions among other family members, grew 7.3% in the same period, totaling 94,873 victims. The same person can appear in more than one of these statistics by suffering different forms of violence.
According to WELT, more than half cases involve body injuries, about a quarter are linked to threats, coercion or persecution and approximately 4% concern crimes of a sexual nature.
Women are the main victims
Women are still the main ones affected in both scenarios. They are almost 80% of victims of violence between intimate partners and 73% in the case of intrafamily aggressions.
“Domestic violence usually means violence against women, which makes services such as the” Violence against Women ‘aid even more important, “said the president of the Germany Social Association (SOVD), Michaela Engelmeier.
The Germany Family Ministry told Welt that increasing domestic violence can be attributed to greater propensity to violence “in the light of social crises and personal challenges”. However, the folder also believes that the numbers reflect a greater arrangement of the victims to denounce these incidents.
The law that guarantees free assistance to victims of this type of violence is recent in Germany. Approved in February this year by the German Parliament, the rule requires states to create protection and counseling services, including guaranteeing vacancies in shelters for women victims of domestic violence.
The federal government will pay a total of 2.6 billion euros (R $ 16.7 billion) between 2027 and 2036 to ensure the implementation of the measures, but the right will only enter into force from 2032.
In 2024, the European Union also approved a regulation with the objective of punishing gender violence, facilitating complaints and harming punishment to aggressors.
Government wants to monitor aggressors by GPS
To better protect women from violence committed by intimate partners, Germany Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig plans to present a bill that forces attackers to use electronic anklets, following a regulation based on the Spanish model, she told the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.
In Spain, as in Brazil, the prohibition of circulation of the perpetrator is not limited to fixed places, such as the victim’s residence or workplace, but also prevents him from approaching beyond a certain distance.
For Hubig, the electronic anklet can allow the aggressor to monitor via GPS. The victim could then carry a device that warns him if the suspect approaches.
Parties ask for new protection rules
The Green Party stressed that violence against women is not a “family drama”, but a “patriarchal violence.”
“It takes more prevention, working with aggressors, faster processes and mandatory training for police and the judiciary,” the party spokeswoman for women’s policies told ULLE Schauws.
The left party defended reforms in the rules of guard and right to visit. The president of SOVD also highlighted the need for specific policies to protect women with disabilities, who face physical violence much more often.
