Donald Trump intends to restrict Nvidia’s chips to Malaysia and Thailand, in an effort to combat the smuggling of these electronics to China. Amid the trade war between the two countries, the US effectively banned Beijing from obtaining advanced technology semiconductors.
The regulation of chip trade, much sought after by its use in AI, began in the government of Joe Biden to undermine initiatives from other countries to create systems of the same level or better than US. The Chamber of Commerce will now increase the regulation of product sales to keep the US ahead of competitive countries in the market.
United States authorities have debated for years which countries should be able to import AI chips produced in the country and under what conditions.
On the one hand, there is strong global demand for Nvidia hardware, and Washington wants the world to build its US technology artificial intelligence systems before China offers a better or cheaper alternative.
On the other hand, the concern grows that once out of control of the United States and its allies, these chips may end up in China or benefit Chinese companies through remote access to data centers abroad.
