US President Trump has finally received his highly discussed tax and expenditure law through the congress. After a long and tense seat, the house of representatives agreed with a narrow majority for the plan, which Trump himself calls the “Big Beautiful Bill”.

Trump signs a symbolic holiday law

The mood in the house ended 218 against 214. Two Republicans voted against. Earlier in the Senate there was an equal position of 50 against 50, so that Vice President Vance as chairman was the deciding factor. Trump puts his signature today under the law, on July 4, the American National Holiday.

The law contains substantial tax cuts for high incomes and companies, extra money for defense and border control, but also radical cutbacks on health care, nature management and sustainability. Critics call the package an ideological redistribution from money from arm to rich.

In particular, the extension of tax benefits from Trumps first term for the richest Americans led to division, also within the Republican Party. “It is precisely the most vulnerable groups that are affected,” warned opponents. But the pressure on the doubting party members was great, with conversations in the White House and appointments on the golf course.

Economists fear interest and inflation

According to estimates, the national debt will increase by 3.3 trillion dollars as a result of the law. Economists and policy analysts warn that this can eventually increase interest and inflation. There is also little support among the public since a poll by Fox News shows that 59 percent of Americans are against the law.

The Democratic representative Hakeem Jeffries tried to slow the mood by speaking continuously for almost nine hours. With that he broke the record for the longest speech ever in the house. He mockingly called the bill the “Big Ugly Bill”.

The question remains whether this package will benefit the economy in the long term, or whether the bill is mainly laid with the lower incomes. Analysts are divided, but indicate that the political landscape has been more polarized by law.
