Amid the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the Israeli government bet on a new force to control the region: the militia led by Yasser Abu Shabab. With approximately 400 Palestinians, and operating exclusively in Rafah, southern track and on the Egyptian border, the paramilitary group is responsible for safety of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation Distribution Centers (GHF).
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier this month that he is “collaborating” with influential Gaza clans to “normalize” the situation of the region. Members of your government arrived a claim that they are sending weapons and providing support to Abu Shabab.
The problem lies, besides the fact that it is not a legitimate Palestinian organization, but imposed on the obscure relationship between militia and GHF. The foundation received serious accusations, such as smuggling opioid pills in the flour bags sent to Gaza, or supporting Israeli army actions that killed hundreds of Palestinians in search of supplies in humanitarian centers.
Already Abu Shabab was previously appointed in a UN memorandum as being responsible for systematic withdrawals of humanitarian aid, which he supposedly should be protecting. The group also did not receive support from the Palestinian population, which rejected any kind of affiliation with him.
A member of the Palestinian Authority (AP), a UN -recognized Palestinian government, revealed to Ynet that the militia also receives support from his organization, as well as Israel and an exiled leader from Fatah, a group led by Yasser Arafat before his death.
The strengthening of Abu Shabab looks like an attempt by these groups to undermine the authority of Hamas, currently the largest organization present in Gaza and of Islamist trend.
