A day of hope became tragedy for thousands of families in Gaza on Friday (27). According to Palestinian sources in Xinhua, at least 40 people were killed by Israeli shots and bombings in different regions of the territory. Among the victims were civilians waiting for food distribution in the midst of the humanitarian crisis that plagues the region.
Witnesses reported that Israeli forces opened fire against a crowd of civilians waiting for humanitarian aid near a US -backed food distribution center in the north of Rafah, southern Gaza. According to doctors at Nasser Hospital in Khan Youis, seven Palestinians died in the attack, and dozens were injured, some in serious condition.
The horror was repeated in another locality. The Al-Awda Hospital in Nusirat in downtown Gaza reported that a person was killed and 39 were injured after the Israeli army shooting civilians who were also waiting for food aid.
In addition, Mahmoud Basal, Civil Defense spokesman in Gaza, confirmed at least 32 deaths in different parts of the enclave due to Israeli air attacks and bombing. So far, there has been no official comment from the Israeli forces on the incidents.
Amid the commotion, the Hamas Group appealed to the United Nations to form an independent international committee to investigate the attacks on Palestinian civilians in front of the aid distribution centers. In a statement, the faction classified what happened as “A blatant crime and more proof of the brutality of occupation (Israel) and its leaders”also requiring the urgent resumption of food distribution led by the UN and humanitarian organizations.
The situation in Gaza, which already faces food, water and medicines, has worsened significantly since March 18, when Israel resumed military operations in the territory. According to local health officials, at least 6,008 Palestinians were killed and 20,591 were injured since the restoration of intensive bombing. The numbers have raised the total balance from October 2023 to 56,331 dead and 132,632 injured.
In recent weeks, reports of shot civilians while waiting for food at different points of Gaza have multiplied, generating international outrage. With more than 2 million people living under extreme conditions, the global community accompanies with concern the worsening of one of the greatest humanitarian crises of this century.
While families cry their dead and overcrowded hospitals struggle to save injured, the question that echoes among the Palestinians is: How long?
