Russian Security Council vice president and former president of the country, Dmitry Medvedev, said on Thursday that an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities could result in a comparable catastrophe to the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The statement was published on his social networks and echoed by Russian state broadcaster RT.

“Everyone, including Israel’s Minister of Defense, with his noisy statements about Khamenei’s fate, must understand that attacks on nuclear facilities are extremely dangerous and can lead to the repetition of Chernobyl’s tragedy,” said Medvedev.

The demonstration occurs in a context of increased tensions between Israel and Iran. According to US press reports, the United States would be evaluating an attack on the Iranian Nuclear Complex of Fordow, an underground installation built to resist air bombing. Military action could involve the use of the GBU-57 penetrating bomb, known as “Bunker Buster”.

Sources heard by the British newspaper The Guardian They indicate, however, that not even this conventional weaponry would be sufficient to destroy Fordow. Some of these sources mentioned the possibility of using a tactical nuclear weapon to achieve the goal. Still according to the GuardianUS President Donald Trump would not be considering this alternative.

The White House officially denied any intention to use nuclear weaponry. According to the station Fox Newsa US government official stated on anonymous condition that “Bunker Busters can fulfill the goal” and “no option has been taken from the table.” The press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stated that a final decision on a possible action will be made in the next two weeks.

Last Friday, Israel made bombing against nuclear facilities in Iran and performed scientists and iracal high-ranked military officers. Tel Aviv’s government justified the operation as a preventive measure to prevent the advance of the Iranian nuclear program.

Iran denies it to have military goals in its nuclear program, a position backed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (AIEA), which claims that there is no evidence that the country is developing nuclear weapons.

In response to the attacks, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday night during a news conference that “despite the bombing, the Iranian underground infrastructure remains operational.” Kremlin has been positioned in favor of dialogue and has already offered mediation between the parties involved.

On Friday, Russian government spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented rumors about a possible use of US nuclear weapons. He classified these speculation as “speculative” and warned that “such an action would be catastrophic.”

The situation intensified further after statements by Israel’s Minister of Defense, Israel Katz. He compared Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Adolf Hitler, stating that the Iranian leader “can no longer be allowed to exist.”

International bodies accompany with concern the scenario, which brings together elements of regional instability and presence of powers with nuclear capacity. Military escalation and aggressive rhetoric increase the risk of a confrontation with repercussions on a global scale.
