Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he does not rule out the possibility of ordering the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatola Ali Khamenei, amid the climbing war between the two countries. The statement was released on Tuesday, 18, by the Russian channel RT, amid new developments of the military confrontation between Israel and Iran.
The statement was given after questions about reports that point out that former US President Donald Trump would have previously rejected an Israeli plan to execute Khamenei. According to the sources cited by the reports, Trump would have refused the plan because he considered that such an action would cause a military climb throughout the region.
When asked about the alleged retreat of the United States, Netanyahu replied, “It won’t climb the conflict, it will end it.”
The Israeli head of government argued that Iran has promoted actions that, according to him, bring the Middle East of a large confrontation. “The ‘eternal war’ is what Iran wants, and they are taking us on the brink of nuclear war. In fact, what Israel is doing is preventing this, ending this aggression,” Netanyahu said.
During the interview, the prime minister was also asked about the concrete possibility of ordering an attempted murder of Ali Khamenei. The answer was straightforward, “Look, we’re doing what we need to do. I’m not going to go into detail, but we’ve already reached their top nuclear scientists.”
The statements occur in the context of a significant increase in military tensions between Israel and Iran. In recent weeks, Israel has intensified air attacks against strategic targets in Iranian territory, including military facilities, command centers and nuclear infrastructure.
On the Iranian side, the Tehran government responded with Operation Promise Truth III, which consists of launching missiles and drones against areas under Israeli control. The Guardian body of the Islamic Revolution (IRGC) has stated that it will continue the offensive until there is a proportional response to the deaths of Iranian officers and scientists occurring after Israeli bombings.
Netanyahu’s statements on a possible direct action against Iran’s supreme leader occur at a time of diplomatic fragility between powers involved in the Middle East scenario. Experts point out that a possible attempt to eliminate Khamenei would represent a paradigm shift in Israel’s type of military response over the last few years.
To date, there is no official confirmation from the United States about the existence of any Israeli plan to execute Ayatollah or the alleged refusal of the Trump administration. The White House and the US State Department did not comment on the statements made by Netanyahu.
Iran, in turn, has not yet issued an official response to the Israeli Prime Minister’s speech. The Iranian government spokesman stated in previous pronouncement that any direct action against Khamenei or other high-ranking authorities will be dealt with as a formal war statement.
Diplomatic sources heard by international vehicles assess that Netanyahu’s lines can be part of a deterrent to the internal scenario and the international public, especially after the Iranian attacks that have reached sensitive areas in Israeli territory.
Behind the scenes, European leaders maintain emergency meetings to discuss possible containment measures. Representatives of the European Union and the UN Security Council expressed concern about the increase in the level of confrontation and the risk of total rupture of diplomatic roads.
In addition to direct confrontation with Iran, Israel also faces internal pressure because of the extension of military operations. Protests were recorded in Tel Aviv, with protesters asking for the opening of an international negotiation channel and the suspension of actions that may result in total war climbing.
Military analysts indicate that Netanyahu’s speech may aim to justify possible future actions, especially if Israel consider the murder of Iranian leaders as a legitimate response within what it considers to be a defensive war.
So far, no Israeli authority besides Netanyahu has commented on the content of the interview. The Prime Minister’s office did not issue a complementary note.
