There is no good solution. At least, until the scandal has perimeter. After the dismay and disappointment with Santos Cerdán, no one dares to ensure that the impudicia will not continue to climb. There are other names under suspicion. And distrust is absolute. At the moment, it is known that the Pretorian Guard of the former secretary of Organization of the PSOE has the days counted. In Madrid and in the territories. All, fairly or unfairly, are under suspicion for having silent or having collaborated with what was number 3 in the organization chart. Pedro Sánchez is willing not to leave the slightest trace of Cerdán in the socialist organization chart. This is one of the few certainties that today exist in the PSOE, after the “cynicism” with which the last one indicated by the UCO in a corrupt plot of bites and rigged works has denied its involvement in the case, even after the demolish report of the Civil Guard was known this week. Another certainty is that there will be this week a round of consultations with the investiture partners to assess whether the support is still standing. President Sopesa attend the control session to the Government on Wednesday in Congress, once the summit in New York has been suspended in defense of the two states.
Everything else is an unknown because the president of the Government continues in shock after the chasco with the man he considered until last Thursday the victim of a campaign of harassment and demolition of the political and media right. So far the representation of a dejected and mourning man came that Cerdán starred for months that, after an unpleasant episode with the editor of a newspaper that was planted at his home to interrogate his wife, the president organized three weeks ago a dinner of the two marriages in the Moncloa to transmit both to him and his wife affection and support.
On Friday, with all the blush conversations in all newspapers and the secretary of Organization on the edge of the imputation, precise instructions were already given to the party manager to withdraw all the credentials, including access to the corporate mail of the PSOE and of course access to bank accounts, to a clip that will voluntarily declare before the Supreme PSOE hopes that he will do next Monday, as he himself communicated to a secretary of the Socialist Parliamentary Group who phoned him to be interested in the matter. Its version is that it is imbued in the paperwork and in the calculations of the unemployment that corresponds to it as a parliamentarian once it is low, but even its own lawyer does not know when the process will occur.
While trying to recover from the coup, Sánchez collects data, reflects and asks opinions to his increasingly narrow circle of collaborators. But, without having a map of possible damages before them, since the information handled by the Judicial Police reaches the media, but not to the government, so it does not know the depth of the scandal and decision making is not easy. General elections? Motion of trust? Extraordinary Congress? “All options are on the table,” they say in La Moncloa.
The president is aware that the matter is extremely serious and that it is not resolved, as announced on Thursday in public appearance, only with a restructuring of the Executive – which is expected of broad scope – or an audit of the party accounts, although it has put the PSOE manager, Anta Fuentes, to review last Friday every accounting note. All possible answers have contraindications until they know the scandal scope and whether or not there will be more involved in the party or government.
Concern for the Navarra derivative
What there is is an extreme concern about a possible Navarre derivative that splashes the Foral Government, for the information that points again about Minister Ángel Víctor Torres and about the president of Congress, Francina Armengol, against whom the ultra -rightist association has already been complained to hearly hear for lying allegedly at parliamentary headquarters, where he denied knowing the commissioner Víctor Aldama. If so, game over. No one would lift a legislature with the third authority of the State investigated, the attorney general, one step away from the bench of the defendants for alleged revelation of secrets and two former secretaries of organization in the heart of a criminal organization. “There would be no way out,” acknowledges a minister who does not want to imagine even such a scenario.
Armengol herself insists, according to her environment, that she did not know the corrupt businessman, who went to the headquarters of the Balearic Government within a delegation accompanying the owner of Globalia, the most important company of the Balearic Islands in one of many institutional meetings she has held with José Hidalgo to talk about the fusion of her airline with Iberia. Something about which, by the way, Armengol ended up informing against because he thought he could harm the interests of the thousands of headquarters in Mallorca. “Well, it turns out that, according to the right, that is to meet a man who came as a companion in one of the encounters. That is not knowing someone, which is what a senator asked: -” Do you know Aldama? ” -“No.”
In the midst of this tangle of reports, recordings, complaints, half -truths, lies and suspicions founded or unfounded, from the Moncloa anticipate that there will be, in any case, “substantive decisions that will surprise even the most critical” and that “the president in no case wait for the storm to love or screw the presidency”, as the media right.
“Those who know him know that if he had been throwing the towel for him. And if he continues it is not precisely for personal appetite,” they say from their cabinet. “The analysis and decisions must be faced from political realism and not from an alleged self -deception because the factors that operate in all this are known by the president and their collaborators much better than the published opinion,” the same interlocutors say.
Neither motion of trust nor government crisis now
The simplest and most powerful way to go out would be to face, in addition to a renewal of the PSOE management, a change of government that gave depth to the legislature, a scenario that in any case was planned for autumn. But that solution, like all, at this time has contraindications. First because, as far as it is known, there are no ministers involved in the scandal. Second, because it would be, according to the same sources to link the performance of the alleged corrupt “with a cabinet that has an accredited service sheet in economic and social matters.” And third because, unless the renovation is limited to the exit of the ministers who are now candidates for the presidency of some autonomous community to devote themselves exclusively to their territories, “the decision would be understood as a purely cosmetic change.”
The motion of confidence would be, in the opinion of another minister, to reissue the same Calvary that the PSOE crossed for the investiture of Sánchez in which each partner put a price on the presidency of the Government. “Another kind of Persian market – another minister is – in which some ask and we give in is the last thing that suits us at this time.”
What is planned is that this week, a round of contacts with the investiture partners to know the solidity of the support is opened. All, to a greater or lesser degree, have complained about the lack of information and, although they are not for the work of supporting a motion of censure driven by Feijóo. They believe that it is not enough to apologize, but that the PSOE must be reset but also the government, and require guarantees of change and that new steps will be taken in the commitments already acquired.
On the most immediate horizon, Sánchez will preside over Monday the meeting of the federal executive and the first decision to make is whether he designates someone as the interim substitute for Santos Cerdán or he throws the weight and organization of the party behind the back to the federal committee that will take place on July 5 in Seville. Some looks are on Antonio Hernando for this transit of just 3 weeks, but what nobody doubts is that “Ferraz cleaning will be deep” and that “there will be no trace of the Cerdán team.” There are even those who ask how it is possible that his narrower collaborator, the Jiennense Juanfran Serrano, has not yet presented his resignation taking into account how far the degree of confidence he had with the already former secretary of Organization, the criticisms he accumulated in the different territories for his way of doing and understanding the policy and understanding the policy and understanding that he declares himself deeply “hurt” with everything that happened.
If any lesson has learned the president of the Government and also Secretary General, in the opinion of some of his collaborators, is that “the immediate future of the party cannot be in the hands of people who have done nothing more than military, mediate and work in the party” as was the case of Ábalos or Cerdán. Too late for a reflection that when it comes to winning primaries or congresses and thanking the services provided, no one takes into account.
So far, of the conversations held with the manager, the socialists do not glimpse suspicious movements that can reveal an irregular financing of the party or that Ábalos or Cerdán, “beyond that now the suspicions extend throughout the world and the fear is justified,” admits a member of the Directorate. Hence, the leader of the Socialists wants to take a prudential time until we find a “completely clean” Cerdán and a macula -free address and that “you can devote 24/7 to clean whatever it takes.”
There are doubts, yes, about whether that deep restructuring of the Executive can face without the call of an extraordinary congress because the revision of the statutes that was made so that the secretary general had his hands free to make changes in the direction, without the need of the endorsement of a concolave, was conceived for an executive, but never for an integral change of the direction as expected. Everything is open. And everything, of course, will depend on whether the scandal does not scale. This Monday, Sánchez will make new decisions and, although in Moncloa the possibility that he himself came out at a press conference was considered after the meeting, this end is still in the air considering that on Wednesday, if as he seems he goes to the control session, he will have a new face to face with Feijóo.
And it is that if something is clear in the Moncloa, it is that those who have already made parallels between the situation of Sánchez in 2025 and Rajoy’s before the Bárcenas Papers of 2013 is that the first “will give the face, it will not try to hide the corruption that is in its party but quite the opposite or will not hurt garments to cut the necessary heads”. Lessons on how to face corruption in their own ranks, they add, they will not admit them “from a right that accumulates today more than 30 cases to judge in court.” Will continue …
