China makes serious accusation against the US to violate commercial agreement signed in Geneva

The China Ministry of Commerce accused the United States on Monday, to seriously compromise the agreements signed in the latest economic and commercial negotiations made in Geneva.

The statement was issued by the Xinhua state agency, based on a statement by a folder spokesman, and occurs in response to a series of unilateral measures adopted by Washington in recent weeks.

According to the statement, the Chinese government has stated that the United States has imposed commercial restrictions that contradict commitments made in a dialogue between Presidents Xi Jinping and Donald Trump, held by telephone on January 17.

Among the measures are new US guidelines for export control of artificial intelligence chips, suspension of selling semiconductor design software for Chinese companies and canceling visas granted to students from China.

“US measures seriously violated the consensus achieved,” said the spokesman. “Instead of reflecting on their own actions, the United States unfoundedly accused China of violating consensus, an allegation that roughly distorts the facts. China firmly rejected these unjustified accusations,” he added.

China’s official positioning indicates an aggravation in bilateral relations and accuses Washington of provocatively and unilateral acting. According to the Chinese authority, such US measures increase instability in the commercial environment between the two countries and make it difficult for economic cooperation.

“The United States unilaterally and repeatedly provoked new economic and commercial friction, exacerbating uncertainty and instability in bilateral relations,” the spokesman said.

The note points out that China, in turn, would have fulfilled the commitments established in Geneva’s understanding, including the suspension of tariffs and other commercial barriers.

“China is firm in protecting its rights and interests and sincere in the implementation of consensus,” said the representative. He also stated that the advances made in Geneva were difficult to achieve and require responsibility for both parties to be maintained.

The China Ministry of Commerce urged the United States to immediately reversing recent measures and has asked both countries to collaborate to preserve the agreements signed.

“We ask the US to immediately correct their mistaken practices,” said the spokesman. He also suggested that a coordinated performance between the two powers would be necessary to ensure a stable and advantageous commercial environment for both sides.

The statement ends with a warning that if Washington maintains current restrictions, Beijing will adopt proportional measures in defense of his interests.

“If the US insists on going the wrong way and continuing to harm China’s interests, China will take energy measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests,” he said.

The accusations occur amid a climb of commercial tensions that, despite several diplomatic meetings, have not yet been fully resolved.

Diffections between the two countries have intensified in strategic areas, such as technology, cyber security and education, with direct impacts on investment and global supply chains.

China considers that recently negotiated commitments, although partial, have been the result of a joint effort to avoid worsening economic disputes. However, the Chinese government understands that recent United States actions endanger these advances and threaten established dialogue channels.

With the possibility of retaliation, the episode signals a new phase of commercial impasses between the two largest economies in the world. To date, US authorities have not publicly commented on Chinese statements released on Monday.
