The EU has agreed on the 17th package of sanctions to Russia since Ukraine invaded in February 2022. In the absence of two member states to give the final approval in their corresponding national parliaments, the 27 will be expected to give green light to the restrictive measures at the meeting of Foreign Ministers next Tuesday. However, the EU prepares more sanctions if Vladimir Putin does not take steps towards peace and, specifically, he does not accept the 30 -day fire proposal on the table.
With the new penalty package, the 27 intend to fence the so -called “Ghost Flot” with which Moscow is getting the restrictions and that their products reach the recipients. Thus, the sanctions are directed to 200 ships that are developing that work. 30 companies that are raffling restrictive measures are also included, especially with the sale of the so -called double -use products with which Russia manages to strengthen their war machinery with products that a priori have no military purpose. 75 people and entities linked to the military industry are also included.
Likewise, 20 entities are sanctioned for spreading misinformation and another 20 people (judges, prosecutors, etc.) involved in the persecution of the opponents Kara Murza and Alekséi Navalni, who died imprisoned. The 17th package adds to the nearly 2,400 people and entities on which restrictions weigh, which involve the prohibition of entry into the EU, among other things.
However, the EU is already preparing to expand the restrictions if Putin does not accept the high fire. This was said in a televised interview on Tuesday night French president Emmanuel Macron, who assured that the measures could be taken in line with the US before Russia’s refusal to take steps towards peace. According to the Gallic leader, the intention would be to include financial services, oil and secondary sellers.
Macron’s words occur while the EU and the US await Putin’s decision on a meeting with Zelenski in Türkiye this Thursday. Initially the Ukrainian President and the EU conditioned that meeting to which Russia fulfilled the proposal of Alto the Fire that has been skipped from the first moment. But now Trump has joined the pressure offering to travel to Istanbul if Putin accepts the offer he has dodged at the moment. What allied sources expect is that there is at least a second level contact.
