Dark details emerged on Wednesday about Israeli air strikes against a UN-managed school in Gaza, which housed 2,000 displaced people who would have killed 30 Palestinians sheltered on the spot.

UN Palestinian Refugee Agency, Unrwa, said the Israeli forces attacked the school in Al Bureij, in downtown Gaza, around 6 pm on Tuesday and again at 10:20 pm.

“The school suffered serious damage and a fire erupted in the shelter, making it difficult to evacuate the victims. Residents had to open a hole in the wall to evacuate the dead and injured,” Unrwa told Un News.

Since the beginning of the war between Hamas and Israel on October 7, 2023, more than 400 schools have been directly hit, according to UN -analyzed satellite images.

Mortal consequences

Images from the place provided by the UN agency showed walls and floors destroyed in the school’s main building.

In the courtyard, hundreds of people can be seen standing, amid crumpled metal sheets, the morning after the attack, with rubble and wooden boards scattered where their shelters were a few hours before.

“Our colleagues are reporting that surviving parents and children are trying to save their belongings between blood and parts of bodies from their relatives and neighbors,” said Unrwa.

The agency noted that fatalities included women and children, while search and rescue operations are underway for several people who are still missing.

Many of those who lived at school when she was hit were displaced “countless times” by the war, which began on October 7, 2023, after terrorist attacks led by Hamas against Israel, emphasized Unrwa.

The attack also caused a fire in an adjacent school, where more tents and temporary shelters were burned and damaged.

Destroyed education

According to UN satellite service, UNOSAT, 95.4% of schools in Gaza have suffered damage since the beginning of the war.

Of the 564 Enclave schools, 501 will need complete reconstruction or major rehabilitation works to work again.

“There is no more humanity in Gaza, and there is no more humanity while the world continues to watch day after families being bombarded, burning alive and starving,” said Unrwa after the last attack.

Failed strategy will not work

In a related development, UN Chief Human Rights, Volker Türk, condemned Israel’s plans on Wednesday to force the population of Gaza to a small area in the southern track.

The measure feeds the concern that Israel’s intention is to make Palestinians’ lives “increasingly incompatible with their continuous existence in Gaza,” he said in a statement.

“There is no reason to believe that the intensification of military strategies, which for a year and eight months have not led to a lasting resolution, including the release of all hostages, will now succeed,” UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Expanding the offensive in Gaza “almost will certainly cause more mass displacement, more deaths and injuries to innocent civilians and the destruction of the remaining little infrastructure of Gaza,” he continued.

Human Rights Specialists warn of irreversible consequences

The growing atrocities in Gaza mark critical moral turnaround and require urgent international action, UN -nominated human rights experts said in a statement.

“While states debate terminology – is it or not genocide?” “Israel continues its relentless destruction of life in Gaza,” he warned, citing attacks by land, air and sea, and a growing number of civilian deaths.

“No one is spared – no children, people with disabilities, lactating women, journalists, health professionals, humanitarian workers or hostages,” they said, noting that, only on March 18, 600 Palestinians were killed, 400 of them children. Independent experts are appointed by the Human Rights Council, are not UN employees and do not receive salary for their work.

Consequences of an Israeli air strike on May 6 against a UNRWA school turned into a shelter in Al Bureij, Gaza, where 30 people were killed, including women and children.

Update of the occupied West Bank

Meanwhile, in occupied West Bank, UN humanitarian aid teams warned of the worsening conditions for Palestinian communities due to the “violence of Israeli forces and settlers.”

The warning came after Israeli forces demolished more than 30 structures on Khallet Athaba, a village in Hebron province, shifting almost a dozen families-or about 50 people.

“This is the majority of the community’s structures and marks the third and largest demolition since February,” said UN Assistance Coordination office, OCHA. It was observed that the area was designated by Israel as a military training zone.

In addition, Israeli forces also began to demolish six houses at the Nur Shams Refugee Field in Tulkarm on Monday, impacting 17 families. They are among more than 100 demolition houses after an Israeli warning issued earlier this month.

Forced transfer fears

OCHA described as dozens of families in camp had little time on Monday to collect their belongings before their homes were demolished.

The agency highlighted the “strong impulse” to dislodge the Palestinians living in the area, “raising concerns about the risks of forced transfer of the population.”

According to international law, Israel, as an occupant power, has the responsibility to protect Palestinians in the West Bank and ensure their safety and dignity, the OCHA insisted.

Humanitarian partners are mobilizing assistance, but urgent international engagement is needed to interrupt these coercive measures and protect vulnerable communities, the UN’s help office said.
