In Sweden, Bitcoin (BTC) is again in the political spotlights. Rickard Nordin, member of parliament for the center party, has formally asked the Minister of Finance to include the digital currency in the Swedish foreign currency reserves.
Bitcoin as a strategic property worldwide on the rise
The proposal comes at a time when worldwide is increasingly focused on the role of digital assets within state reserves. According to Nordin, it is high time that Sweden now also enters into this discussion. “More and more central banks are talking about the influence of Bitcoin on monetary policy,” said the politician. He emphasizes that countries such as El Salvador BTC have since designated as legal tender.
America as an example
Nordin also refers to the United States, where former President Donald Trump recently set up a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. On March 6, 2025, he signed an executive order to officially create this strategic reserve. With this step, the largest economy in the world sets a clear tone, which already exerts its influence worldwide, and also in Sweden.
A comment here is that the government does not purchase the tokens, but uses the BTC that have been obtained through criminal or civil forfeiture statements. Nevertheless, this development is seen by many crypto enthusiasts as huge bullish: it shows that Bitcoin is increasingly recognized as strategically valuable possession.
Central bank remains reluctant
Although Swedish regulations currently offer no room for storing crypto currency in the official reserves, the debate on that is in full swing. However, the Swedish central bank remains cautious. Riksbank Gouverneur Erik Thedéen announced in March 2024 that, according to him, BTC has no place in the Swedish financial system. Earlier, in 2021, Swedish authorities even argued for a European ban on the energy-intensive proof-of-work (POW) consensus mechanism that is the core of the network.
Yet Nordin cannot be discouraged. With his written question, he not only wants to draw attention to the Swedish Bitcoin currency reserves, but also the broader discussion about digital assets in government policy. He calls on the government to seriously investigate the risks and opportunities of a Bitcoin reserve.
