The Vice President of the Republic and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, said on Monday, 10, that Brazil intends to intensify its relationship with the United States and negotiate balanced conditions in relation to the tariffs applied by the US government to steel imports.
The statement was made during an interview with CBN radio. Alckmin said that the goal of the Brazilian government is to achieve an understanding that benefits both parties in commercial negotiations ongoing with the United States.
According to the vice president, Brazil seeks an agreement that avoid damage to national exports of the steel industry. Alckmin pointed out that the measure announced by the US government may directly impact Brazilian producers and said the dialogue with US authorities is underway.
The week before, Alckmin attended a gathering meeting with US Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick. At the meeting, alternatives were discussed to reduce the effects of commercial barriers imposed on Brazilian steel exports.
During the interview, Alckmin stressed that the United States record commercial surplus with Brazil. According to him, about 70% of US exports to the Brazilian market enter the country with zero tariff.
The vice president used this data as an argument to justify the need for a balanced negotiation between the two countries.
Alckmin stated that Brazil seeks to build a structured commercial relationship with the United States, focusing on increasing economic cooperation and stimulating bilateral trade.
According to him, the Brazilian government considers a priority to expand the access of national products to the US market, especially in sectors with the highest potential exporter.
The minister stated that the country is willing to maintain open dialogue with US authorities and that Brazilian trade policy will be conducted based on the search for agreements that promote stability and predictability for national exporters.
The Brazilian steel industry follows discussions with concern about the risk of loss of competitiveness.
The announcement made by the US government has generated reaction from industry representatives, who advocate the performance of the Brazilian government to preserve access to the US market.
The tariffs announced by the United States are part of a set of measures aimed at protecting local industry.
The US government alleges the need for trade defense in the face of practices that it considers harmful to the internal productive sector.
Brazil is one of the main exporters of steel products to the United States, especially the supply of semi -wadders.
Raising tariffs can affect the performance of national companies that operate in this segment and compromise commercial flow between the two countries.
Alckmin stated that the government will continue to seek solutions through diplomatic and commercial channels.
The vice president also said that the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services is evaluating the impacts of the announced measures and that the government’s action will focus on preserving the national interest.
Conversations between Brazil and the United States occur in a broader context of commercial policies reconfiguration in various economies.
The Brazilian government has reiterated the need to strengthen its international insertion based on agreements that guarantee access to markets and favor the competitiveness of national production.
Alckmin did not specify the next steps in negotiations with the United States, but indicated that new meetings could take place in the coming months.
According to him, the Brazilian government considers it essential to maintain constant dialogue with the main business partners to face challenges imposed by the international scenario.
The Ministry of Development said it will continue to follow the situation of the steel industry and monitor the consequences of the measures adopted by the United States.
The folder pointed out that it will continue to ensure adequate conditions to Brazilian exports and avoid damage to the productive sector.
The dialogue between the two countries should continue in multilateral commercial forums and bilateral dealings conducted by Itamaraty and the Ministry of Development.
The Brazilian government expects dialogue to result in alternatives that maintain commercial flow and contribute to the stability of economic relations with the United States.
