USA soften Russian aggression in the G7, changing discourse on war in Ukraine and highlighting an approximation between Trump and Putin
The United States is opposing calling Russia to the aggressor on a G7 statement on the third anniversary of Moscow’s large -scale invasion of Ukraine, threatening to disrupt a traditional demonstration of unit, according to five western authorities familiar with the matter.
The participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a G7 virtual summit on Monday has not yet been agreed, authorities said.
According to Financial TimesDisagreement arises after US President Donald Trump blamed Ukraine for the war, said Zelensky as a “dictator without elections” and suggested that Russia should be invited back to the G7.
US envoy opposed the term “Russian aggression” and similar descriptions that have been used by G7 leaders since 2022 to describe the conflict, Western authorities said.
The world’s leading economies traditionally issues a support statement on February 24, the day the large -scale invasion began three years ago.
“We are firm where there must be a distinction between Russia and Ukraine. They are not the same, ”told an informed authority on the matter to the Financial Times.
“Americans are blocking this language, but we are still working on it and hopeful of an agreement,” the authority added.
The US embassy in Kiev refused to comment.
USA reject Russian aggression
Russia’s aggression was mentioned five times in the G7 leaders’ statement last year. “We ask Russia to immediately cease its war of aggression and completely and unconditionally remove its military forces from the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine,” the 2024 statement said.
Trump’s insistence on softening language reflects a broader change in US politics to describe war as “conflict in Ukraine,” two people familiar with the subject said.
Recent statements from the US State Department use a similar essay, including a summary of the meeting of Rubio Secretary of State Marco Rubio with Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov in Riyadh, which mentions twice “the conflict in Ukraine.”
The change marks a divergence of the language used by the Biden government, which often used terms such as “Russian aggression” by referring to the largest land war in Europe since World War II.
Approach between Trump and Putin
The dispute over the statement takes place after a week when Trump praised Putin, agreed with many of his demands on the Russian War in Ukraine and showed the willingness to normalize Washington’s relations with Moscow, sending high US officials to meet with high Russian employees on Tuesday in Riade.
Trump also falsely stated that Zelensky had an approval rate in Ukraine of only 4%. A survey published this week showed that the president had 57% home support, above 52% in December, according to the Kiev International Institute of Sociology.
Putin positively reacted to the Trump government approaches. “US negotiators were totally different – they were open to a negotiation process without prejudice or judgments about what was done in the past,” Putin said after the Riade meeting. “They intend to work together.”
