Hate against Asians increases and reaches alarming levels, driven by xenophobic speeches and extremist politicians in the US
Hatred against Asians has increased significantly since the 2024 presidential elections, according to data released by a non -profit organization that monitors online insults and threats of violence against Pacific American and Ilhéus Asians (AAPI).
Stop Aapi Hate, the largest US organization that tracks this data, says that the climate of anti-immigrant and racist rhetoric of US President Donald Trump and its allies resulted in an “alarming increase” of online hatred, mainly directed. to the South Asian communities.
According to the Middle East Eye, Apesquisa showed that hatred against South-Asiatics increased significantly in December 2024, when billionaires Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy advocated an increase in the number of H-1B visas issued in the context of Trump’s election campaign, which highlighted migrants and minority groups.
Indians are the greatest beneficiaries of the H-1B Visa Program.
Indian immigrants were accused of “stealing jobs”, especially in white collar occupations, and thus threatening “whites”.
While the H-1B visa debate focused on Indian technology workers, there was also hatred for Uber drivers, fast-food workers and Indian call center staff. After the murder of United Healthcare CEO, there were also calls to attack Indian and American CEOs.
Although hatred against Oriental Asians has also increased after the H-1B debate, the data show that it was fed even more by rhetoric around the Tiktok video platform and the AI DeepSek company, both Chinese owned, and For videos that supposedly showed new Chinese military aircraft.
Historically, there is a correlation between the negative coverage of news about immigrants and/or their countries of origin and animosity against these groups.
“We are extremely alarmed by the recent hatred peaks that Asian communities face today, both online and personally,” said Manjusha Kulkarni, co -founder of Stop Aapi Hate and executive director of Aapi Equity Alliance in the report.
“Trump and his loyal have fueled the flames of the anti-Asian scapegoat and prejudice for years. And today, they continue to encourage racists to commit acts of hatred. ”
The numbers
AAPI has monitored online insults and threats of violence against Asian communities in online extremist spaces, and data show that January 2025 has had the largest number of anti-seatic insults since the beginning of monitoring in August 2022, with a total of 87,945 insults. .
Anti-seatic insults increased by 66% after Trump’s presidential victory in 2024, with 75% of these insults directed to the South Asian communities-a total of 63,258.
Insults against oriental Asians also increased dramatically in January 2025, rising 54% compared to December 2024 and 51% compared to November 2024, post-election-with a total of 23,287.
Online threats of violence against Asian communities have reached their highest levels in December 2024, which can be attributed to the H-1B debate among Trump supporters, where some factions are pressing on even more extreme anti-immigrant policies. Of the December threats, 76% were directed to South Asian-equivalent to 884 threats of online violence.
Existing research suggests that there is a correlation between face -to -face hatred crimes and online hatred acts. As it usually takes months or years for data on face -to -face acts to be released, online spaces can serve as an early warning system for what is happening in real time.
Cynthia Choi, co -founder of Stop Aapi Hate and Chinese Executive Codirer for Affirmive Action, said in the report that Pacific Asians and Ilhéus are suffering the impact of the fierce political climate.
“Like the only racial group mostly born abroad – and representing one in seven indocmented immigrants – AAPI communities are suffering devastating damage as a result of Trump’s xenophobic agenda.”
