Deepseek is exploring the development of internal AI chips, which can put it on an equal footing with OpenAi, despite the challenges imposed by global restrictions
DeepSeek is allegedly exploring an contract in the semiconductor industry, as the company would now be eager to develop internal AI chips, expanding its computational capacities.
DeepSeek can enter the race for their own AI chips, along with its archrival OpenAi, although it takes time for now
DeepSeek has evolved massively in recent months, from a “parallel project” to a company that was able to impact the global AI industry with the launch of its state -of -the -art LLM models.
Not only did the company compete with OpenAi GPT O1, but it was also said that it had limited access to computational power, although this was refuted in a report we discussed here.
Now, according to Digitimes, DeepSeek is exploring the possibility of creating its own AI chips, joining the trend of other AI companies that seek to follow the same path.
Although the report does not mention much about Deepseek’s chip projects, he says the company started a “big recruitment campaign”, hiring semiconductor experts to lead the project.
This is not as simple as it may seem, as the development of an AI chip requires an extensive supply chain process, and for Chinese companies, the main problem is to acquire the necessary semiconductor processes due to global sanctions.
The only access to chips they have is through sources like SMIC, but it is also far behind the global pace of semiconductor.
For now, it is alleged that DeepSeek has access to about 10,000 GPUs H800 AI “China specific” and 10,000 H100 AI chips, totaling about $ 1 billion in computing resources.
Despite seeing US commercial restrictions, this has not prevented Deepseek at all, as the AI company has equipment comparable to those its competitors have, and there is probably much more, which has not been released for now.
In addition, the company also operates in infringing workloads on Huawei’s Ascenda Ai chips. Therefore, they have a diverse arsenal.
The concept of internal chips for DeepSeek is undoubtedly questionable, as the company has not evolved as much as competitors and OpenAI, but it is great to see the company exploring the option, as it will increase diversity in the AI market. The key issue is whether DeepSeek can reach the stages of implementation.
