Where the Bitcoin (BTC) course remains changeable, the computing power of the network continues to grow impressively. The difficulty to mine new blocks has again broken a record. At block height 883.008 it rose by 5.61% and is now at 114.17 trillion. This makes validation of blocks and securing the network more complex than ever.
What does this increase mean?
The difficulty level of Bitcoin is automatically adjusted every two weeks based on the total computing power of the network. Two weeks ago a slight decrease of 2.12% was registered, but now the trend is rising again. The current hashrate, or the total computing power of all miners, is 819.21 EXAHASHES per second (EH/S). This means a decrease of 32.79 EH/s since 7 February 2025.
Due to the increased level of difficulty, it is becoming increasingly difficult for miners to find new blocks. With a current value of 114.17 trillion, the mining is now 114.17 trillion times more complex than when Bitcoin was launched in 2009.
Impact on block times and miners
Despite the rising level of difficulty, the block times remain remarkably short. Where it normally takes about 10 minutes to find a new block, the current average is just 9 minutes and 29 seconds. This shows that, despite the increasing challenges, miners still continue to operate at full power and efficiently.
Large 73 mining companies are currently active on the network, each of which contributes at least 54.62 kilohhash per second (KH/s). However, small miners with limited computing power hardly have any chance to find a block. For comparison: Foundry, the largest mining pool, delivers no less than 257 triljard hashes per second and thus dominates a large part of the network.
Will the level of difficulty continue to rise?
There are few indications that the rise in the level of difficulty comes to an end quickly. BTC miners continue to continue, despite the increasing challenges. If this trend continues, the level of difficulty will continue to grow in the coming months. This would mean that Mining requires more and more energy and specialized equipment, so that only the largest and most efficient miners can maintain a competitive position.
