After a turbulent period as chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Gary Gensler takes a new way: he will teach the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). There he focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), a technology that transforms the financial world at lightning speed.
From crypto supervisor to AI-expert
Gensler led the sec for four years and was known for its strict enforcement within the crypto sector. Under his supervision, numerous lawsuits were brought against crypto companies, which caused him a lot of criticism in the industry. At the same time, the first crypto-etfs were approved during his term of office, an important step towards institutional adoption of digital assets.
With his switch to Mit’s Sloan School of Management, Gensler is moving his focus to AI. He will do research and develop policy on the impact of artificial intelligence on the financial sector. In addition, he will collaborate with academics and companies to study AI-related regulations and applications.
Important role in AI policy
Although his new position seems less directly influential than his role in the SEC, Gensler remains a prominent voice in the world of technology and regulations. MIT works closely with policy makers and tech companies, so that his insights will probably continue to work in future AI legislation.
Gensler is no stranger to MIT. In 2018 he already gave lectures on blockchain technology, where he analyzed both the opportunities and risks of the sector. He also previously published research into the systemic financial risks of AI, which earned him considerable expertise in this area.
Criticism from the crypto community
His return to MIT is not received positively by everyone. Devin Walsh, executive director and co -founder of the Uniswap Foundation, made himself heard on X Fel:
“As Mit Sloan-Alumnus, I am incredibly ashamed and disappointed that they have hired Gensler again. A waste of time, tuition and energy for every student who hopes to study and support new and innovative technologies. ”
This criticism underlines the resentment that still lives in the crypto industry about Genders strict approach. Yet it is impossible to deny that with his experience at the intersection of regulation and technology he can play a key role in the development of AI policy.
