For 15 months, Israel and the United States have tried to wipe the Palestinian people off the map. They have failed due to come on (firmness or perseverance) Palestinian and because the global movement for Palestinian freedom did not allow it.

Over the past 15 months, the Palestinian people stood firm, continuing to report on the ground, providing medical care, keeping their schools and universities running, and remaining community and committed to returning to their homes and lands, despite the endless horrors. and unspeakable crimes inflicted by the genocidal Israeli army.

Over the past 15 months, the grassroots movement of which Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) is a part has constituted the largest and most sustained anti-war movement in half a century. While the mainstream media attempted to cover up Israeli war crimes and the US government repressed any opposition to those atrocities, the Palestine solidarity movement refused to cede its power to these violent institutions. From train stations to city halls to the halls of Congress, an unprecedented number of people – including an unprecedented number of Jews – spent these last 15 months tirelessly organizing to ensure that the current situation was impossible until this campaign of annihilation.

And the impact was enormous. Last November, two-thirds of the American population, including a majority of American Jews, supported an arms embargo on Israel to stop the relentless killing of Palestinians.

This is a fragile ceasefire

Our most urgent task is to ensure that this ceasefire is maintained. As JVP wrote in our official statement: “We hold firmly to the hope that Israeli military bombing will cease, that the starvation suffered by Palestinians at the hands of the Israeli government will end, that reconstruction in Gaza will begin, and that the hostages held in Israel and Gaza return to their families.

On Wednesday, following the announcement of a ceasefire agreement, Palestinians in Gaza took to the streets in celebration and relief. This ceasefire could save countless lives, but we know that this moment is fragile and, if left in the hands of the Israeli and American governments, will not hold.

In just the 24 hours since the ceasefire was announced, the Israeli government killed more than 80 Palestinians. We know that even when the bombs stop falling, Israel will have already destroyed living conditions in Gaza. Now is the time to intensify our fight to truly end the Israeli government’s genocide of the Palestinians. We echo the words of the Arab Resource and Organization Center (AROC), which reminds us:

“As we commemorate this ceasefire, it is time to redouble our efforts with clear demands:

  • Ensure that the ceasefire remains permanent.
  • Demand that Israel withdraw its military forces from Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and all occupied territories.
  • Ensure unrestricted aid and reconstruction of Gaza.
  • Hold Israel accountable for its crimes against humanity.

It is up to all of us to ensure that this temporary agreement becomes the end of the genocide and real change: the lifting of Israel’s siege of Gaza and the dismantling and ending of the Israeli occupation and apartheid.

That means that the ceasefire is a call to organize more than ever. This means we have to fight with renewed energy to stop the flow of American weapons and military funds to Israel. This means resisting cynical legislation from the US Congress that seeks to sanction the International Criminal Court for holding Israeli war criminals accountable. This means continuing the fight to divest [en las empresas y corporaciones que aoyan] Israeli genocide and apartheid economics at all levels of society, from university campuses to [el apoyo económico que sale de las arcas de los] state treasures.

Our movements have power. We recommit ourselves to continuing to build that power and to organize to achieve Palestinian liberation and a just and free future for all.
