SSenator Marco Rubio faces confirmation hearing with sharp criticism of China and promises to prioritize American interests as his combative stance marks the beginning of global tensions
Senator Marco Rubio will claim that China lied and cheated to achieve superpower status at the expense of the United States, according to statements he will make during his confirmation hearing as secretary of state on Wednesday.
Rubio will call on the US to put its “core national interests above all else again” as it works to “create a free world out of chaos,” according to his statements.
“We welcome the Chinese Communist Party into this global order,” Rubio plans to say. “And they enjoyed all its benefits. But they ignored all their obligations and responsibilities. Instead, they lied, cheated, hacked and stole their way to global superpower status, at our expense.”
The comments, in which Rubio also criticized Latin American “despots and narco-terrorists” for driving mass migration and harming American communities, sum up the Florida senator’s worldview.
The harsh words against Chinese leaders also reflect Rubio’s long-standing reputation as an outspoken critic of China and could set the new administration up for an early confrontation with Beijing — especially as President-elect Donald Trump has promised to impose significant new tariffs on China .
Rubio will also say that voters chose Trump because they want a strong America that promotes peace abroad and prosperity at home, and that will be the central mission of the State Department if he is confirmed. While the U.S. will “never be indifferent to the suffering of our fellow human beings” around the world, he said the administration will ensure that every program it funds benefits the country itself.
“The direction he [Trump] has contributed to the conduct of our foreign policy is clear,” Rubio plans to say. “Every dollar we spend, every program we fund, and every policy we follow must be justified by answering three simple questions: Does it make America safer? Does this make America stronger? Does this make America more prosperous?”
Rubio, a longtime member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that is considering his nomination, is expected to face little opposition from both Republicans and Democrats during his confirmation process.
However, there are also questions about what kind of influence Rubio will wield as the top U.S. diplomat in the new administration.
Trump is already being advised by billionaires like Elon Musk, who has taunted leaders of the United Kingdom and Germany, and appointed a host of friends and advisers as special envoys to oversee some of Washington’s most important foreign policy priorities — including the war between Ukraine and Russia and the Middle East.
Rubio, who ran for president and clashed with Trump during the 2016 Republican primaries, said in his remarks that America’s wealth is not “unlimited” and its power is not “infinite,” but that “putting our national interests at the core Above all, it is not isolationism.”
“What good are our allies if America is not strong?” Rubio intends to say.
