Lawmakers in the US state of Arkansas want to ban Bitcoin mining near military bases. Within a range of 30 miles, it would soon no longer be possible to mine near military bases, camps, hospitals, clinics or weapon arsenals.

What are they afraid of?

They may be afraid of the enormous amount of computing power that would potentially put next to a military base. This would theoretically make it possible to do some dangerous things.

The bill is somewhat similar to an executive order from President Joe Biden in May, which prevented a Chinese-linked mining company from locating near a military base in Wyoming.

If this bill passes, the Lonoke County mining facility in particular would be affected. It was built near Little Rock Air Force Base in Cabot, Arkansas.

This facility is owned by Florida-based real estate company Interstate Holdings. While the mayor of Cabot is concerned about noise pollution from the facility, the Senators are concerned about national security.

Why did they sit in this place?

“Why did they choose to locate in this facility less than five miles from our air base? This is a national security concern,” Senator Hill said in December.

Of course, Hill has a point. Why would you build something like that five miles from an army base. That is of course asking for trouble. Especially at a time when cybersecurity is becoming increasingly important.
