Elon Musk evaluates strategies to destabilize Keir Starmer’s government, including support for right-wing populist movements and fierce criticism on social media

Elon Musk has privately discussed with allies how Sir Keir Starmer could be removed as UK prime minister before the next general election, according to people briefed on the matter.

Musk, the world’s richest man and a close ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, is exploring ways he and his right-wing allies can destabilize the British Labor government, in addition to the aggressive posts he has made on his media platform. social, X, sources said.

“He believes that Western civilization itself is threatened,” one of the people added.

According to associates, Musk has been seeking information about the possibility of building support for alternative British political movements — especially the right-wing populist party Reform UK — to force a change of prime minister before the next elections.

In the British parliamentary system, prime ministers exercise power because they lead the party with the largest number of MPs. Several prime ministers in recent decades, including Sir Tony Blair and Boris Johnson, won large majorities in elections but left office mid-term due to falling popularity.

Last week, Musk demanded a new national investigation into historical cases of sexual exploitation of girls by gangs made up mostly of British-Pakistani men in several cities in the United Kingdom.

Musk accused Starmer, a former director of public prosecutions in England and Wales who handled child sexual abuse cases, of being “complicit” in the rape of Britain. He also described Jess Phillips, child protection minister, as an “apologist for rape genocide” after she rejected Oldham council’s request for the Home Office to conduct an investigation into the Greater Manchester exploitation scandal.

Starmer strongly rejected Musk’s criticism of his time as prosecutor. On Monday, he declared that those “who spread lies and disinformation” are not interested in the victims, but only “in themselves.” Phillips accused Musk of putting his life at risk.

Matt Goodwin, a right-wing political commentator, said Musk — and other Americans — were “fascinated” by the UK exploitation gang scandal last week, in part because “it’s such a horrible thing.” He also believes this is due to Musk’s “instinctive distrust” of the Labor government and Keir Starmer.

Musk was approached for comment.

In a surprising move over the weekend, Musk distanced himself from Nigel Farage, dashing the Reform UK leader’s hopes that the billionaire would make a major donation to his party soon. Musk declared that “the Reform party needs a new leader” and that “Farage doesn’t have what it takes.”

Musk has been evaluating potential candidates to replace Farage as party leader, including Reform UK MP Rupert Lowe, and has been investigating the mechanisms available for such a switch, according to people briefed on his thinking.

Reform UK has seen a rise in support in recent months, with opinion polls indicating that 22% of the public support the party, up from 14% in July’s election.

Meanwhile, the Labor Party has 28% support, with the Conservatives at 24%, according to the Politico poll.

Musk’s split with Farage follows a meeting between the two at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida last month, when the Reform UK leader described the serial entrepreneur as a “friend”.

Farage played down the disagreement on Tuesday. He told LBC radio he will see Musk later this month and plans to travel to the US to attend Trump’s inauguration in Washington.

“I have no desire to go to war with Elon Musk, and I won’t,” he added.

Starmer, on the other hand, is not expected to attend Trump’s inauguration. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch also has no plans to attend.
