Brazil, holding the presidency of Brics since the beginning of January 2024, made official this Monday, January 6th, the entry of Indonesia as a full member of the group. This expansion, the first under Brazilian leadership, was initially approved at the Johannesburg Summit in August 2023, and materialized after the formation of the new Indonesian government post-2024 presidential elections.

The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a note formalizing Indonesia’s admission and highlighting the relevance of this movement for Brics. “Indonesia shares with the other members of the group support for the reform of global governance institutions and contributes positively to the deepening of cooperation in the Global South, priority themes for the Brazilian presidency of BRICS, whose motto is Strengthening Cooperation in the Global South for more Inclusive and Sustainable Governance”, stated the statement.

The inclusion of Indonesia, recognized as the largest economy in Southeast Asia, is seen as strategic for the BRICS, which seeks to strengthen its influence and cooperation among developing countries. The decision to join Indonesia reflects the group’s objective of expanding its reach and depth in global economic and political issues, reinforcing the role of developing countries on the international stage.

This expansion to include Indonesia marks a significant moment for BRICS, especially considering contemporary global challenges and the need for more inclusive and sustainable governance. The membership also points to a growing alignment between the economic and social policies of BRICS members and Indonesia’s vision for more robust cooperation among countries in the Global South.
