Russia says it thwarted Ukrainian bomb attacks on military leaders in Moscow and detained suspects recruited by the SBU
Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) reported on Thursday (26) that it thwarted several assassination attempts planned by Ukrainian intelligence services against high-ranking Russian army officers and their families in Moscow, using bombs disguised as portable chargers. or document folders.
On December 17, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) killed Lieutenant General Kirillov, head of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Protection Troops, in Moscow, by detonating a bomb attached to an electric scooter at the entrance to your residential building.
An SBU source confirmed to Reuters that Ukrainian intelligence was behind the attack. Russia classified the killing as a terrorist attack and promised retaliation.
“The Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation prevented a series of assassination attempts against high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Defense,” the FSB stated.
“Four Russian citizens involved in the preparation of these attacks have been detained,” it said in a statement.
The FSB, the main successor to the former Soviet KGB, said the Russian citizens had been recruited by Ukraine’s intelligence services.
One of the suspects allegedly recovered a bomb in Moscow disguised as a portable charger, intended to be attached with magnets to the car of a senior Ministry of Defense official. Another suspect was tasked with carrying out surveillance of Russian military authorities, with one of the plans involving the delivery of a bomb disguised as a folder of documents.
“An explosive device disguised as a portable charger, with magnets attached, was supposed to be placed under the official car of one of the senior leaders of the Russian Ministry of Defense,” detailed the FSB.
The exact date of the planned attacks is still unclear, but one of the suspects claimed to have recovered a bomb on December 23, according to the FSB.
Russian state TV showed images of some of the suspects who confessed to having been recruited by Ukrainian intelligence to carry out attacks on employees of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
Moscow accuses Ukraine of being behind a series of high-profile assassinations on Russian soil aimed at weakening the country’s morale, as well as claiming that the West supports a “terrorist regime” in Kyiv.
Ukraine, which considers the Russian war an existential threat to the Ukrainian state, has already made clear that it considers such targeted killings to be a legitimate tool.
In August 2022, Darya Dugina, the 29-year-old daughter of a prominent Russian nationalist, was killed near Moscow. THE New York Times reported that US intelligence agencies believe parts of the Ukrainian government authorized the assassination.
US officials later reprimanded Ukrainian officials for the attack, according to the Times. Ukraine has denied involvement in Dugina’s death.
