Lavrov and Swiss minister discuss the war in Ukraine, but what was actually said remains a mystery
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov discussed the war in Ukraine with his Swiss counterpart Ignazio Cassis in a phone call on Wednesday, his ministry said on Thursday.
Switzerland hosted a peace conference in June at the request of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, to which Russia was not invited. Zelenskiy has said he hopes to organize a follow-up meeting attended by Russia, although Moscow said in September it would not participate.
The Russian statement did not say whether Lavrov and Cassis talked about the proposed second conference, but noted that Switzerland was “one of the countries showing interest in facilitating an agreement.”
“In light of Bern’s attempts to promote the idea of an agreement based on the ‘V. Zelenskiy formula’, the Russian side highlighted the absolute folly of counting on the presentation of ultimatums to Moscow to resolve the Ukrainian crisis, agreed behind the scenes by West and Kiev”, he stated.
The agency said the call was made on Switzerland’s initiative and that the two sides agreed to continue contacts.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier on Thursday that Moscow was ready for talks on ending the 34-month conflict, which he said should be based on current “realities” on the ground and a draft agreement. which was discussed with Ukraine in talks in Istanbul shortly after the start of the war in 2022.
Zelenskiy said there was no deal at the time and that Ukraine was responding to a Russian ultimatum.
