A Russia announced ambitious plans to develop a new rail system linking the world’s largest coal field, located in the vast sedimentary basin of Tunguskawith export ports on the east coast of the country, close to the border with China.

This development aims to facilitate the transportation of coal for export, especially to Asian markets such as China.

The Tunguska basin, which covers one million square kilometers in Siberia and Russia’s far eastern region, has proven reserves of 6.4 billion tons of coal, as disclosed by Moscow in October.

The new railway line will extend to Khabarovsk Krai, one of the country’s main coal-exporting regions, which borders China’s Heilongjiang province.

In addition to transporting coal from the Tunguska basin, the railway will also serve the Elga coal complex, one of the largest coking coal deposits in the world, already in operation and used mainly in steel production.

A China Coal Economic Research Association highlighted in an article published on its website and WeChat account that, despite the difficulties of access and the harsh climate that characterize the region, the Tunguska basin has great potential for coal exploration.

The project is viewed with great interest by Beijing’s coal industry, given the potential for a significant increase in Russian coal exports to China, thereby strengthening Chinese energy security and fostering bilateral economic cooperation in the region.
