Armed opposition groups managed to enter Damascus, the Syrian capital, early this Sunday and announced that the “tyrant” Bashar al Assad “has fled” the country.

Forces led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) together with militias backed by Turkey announced on Telegram that “Tyrant Bashar al Assad has fled” and “we declare the city of Damascus free.”

Confirmation that Assad had resigned came from Russia, the Syrian government’s main ally. The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Bashar al-Assad, who ruled Syria for almost 25 years, left the country after giving orders for a peaceful transfer of power, although they did not clarify where he is. The ministry stated that Moscow has not participated in the negotiations over his departure.

Bashar al-Assad became president in 2000, succeeding his father, Hafez al-Assad, who had seized power in the 1970s in a coup d’état. In 2011, protests in the country, which were part of the Arab Spring, were brutally repressed, giving way to a devastating civil war that left hundreds of thousands dead and millions displaced.

The leader of the Syrian opposition group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, ordered insurgent forces not to approach official institutions in Damascus, stating that they will remain under the supervision of the prime minister until they are “officially” handed over. .
