Telegram opens the door to mass crypto adoption, but browsers remain indispensable

Telegram has accelerated crypto adoption worldwide by offering integrated Mini Apps and support for various crypto wallets. Users can now manage digital assets directly through the messenger, which has led some to see Telegram as a potential key to a billion crypto users. Still, Telegram is not considered a threat to traditional crypto entry points, such as web browsers.

Crypto browsers continue to lead

Crypto-friendly browsers like Brave and Opera have played a central role in digital asset adoption for years. Brave’s vice president of operations, Luke Mulks, emphasized that Telegram’s rise is not seen as competition: “The browser remains the gateway to the web, including Web3.” According to Mulks, Brave has been offering integrated crypto solutions such as wallets and earning options for years, so Telegram is seen as a complement rather than a replacement.

Opera shares a similar view. Jorgen Arnesen, Executive Vice President of Opera Mobile, stated that web-based crypto adoption will eventually surpass Telegram’s initiatives: “Browsers like Chrome have developed a thriving ecosystem of crypto extensions and tools that allow users to interact with crypto directly through their browser .”

TON is expanding beyond Telegram

Telegram plays a crucial role in the TON ecosystem, which experienced significant growth in 2024. Mini Apps such as Hamster Kombat and Notcoin have introduced many new users to the world of crypto. Still, Alena Shmalko, ecosystem leader of the TON Foundation, emphasizes that Telegram is not the only focus: “We are working on a decentralized ecosystem where users can access TON products via web apps, Telegram Mini Apps or even Chrome extensions.”

While Telegram remains a major catalyst for crypto adoption, founder Pavel Durov is under pressure. French prosecutors are investigating his involvement in alleged “illegal transactions” on the platform. This investigation could have major consequences for Telegram’s image and further crypto activities.

Future of crypto adoption

Although Telegram plays an important role in the growth of crypto applications, the browser remains indispensable as an access point to both Web2 and Web3. Telegram’s success shows the growing demand for crypto solutions, but the power of browsers like Brave and Opera proves that the web-based ecosystem is still dominant.
