A significant reserve of oil and natural gas has been identified off the coast of South Korea, as announced by Brazilian geologist Vitor Abreu.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol highlighted the relevance of the finding, which could place South Korea as an influential player in the global energy market.
The reserve is estimated to contain up to 14 billion barrels of oil, enough to meet the country’s oil demand for four years and natural gas for 29 years.
The impact of this discovery is observed both in the economic potential and in the implications for the global energy market. The reserve could not only satisfy domestic demand but also provide energy resources to external markets.
However, Vitor Abreu warned of the challenges and risks associated with oil exploration, mentioning that there is an 80% probability of failure in the effective production of the resources found.
Locally, the news was met with a combination of optimism and caution. The prospect of economic advantages generated by a substantial oil reserve is countered by skepticism about the project’s costs and risks.
Critics, especially opposition politicians, have expressed concerns about the possible financial burden on taxpayers, highlighting the uncertainty of exploration results, which will be decisive until 2025.
