Donald Trump was declared the winner in Arizona, concluding a string of key victories for Republicans in the swing states. This result consolidates a significant advantage over the Democrats, as reported by The Guardian. Next Wednesday, Trump has a scheduled meeting with Joe Biden at the White House to discuss the transition of power.
In his first term, Trump encountered resistance to implementing his agenda, with key congressional figures such as Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell not aligned with his policies. With the House of Representatives under Democratic control in the second half of his presidency, his actions were even more limited.
Now, in his second term, the scenario seems more favorable for Trump. The still undecided races indicate that Republicans are on the verge of securing control of both chambers of Congress, according to The Economist.
Projections indicate that the party could reach 53 seats in the Senate with a victory in Pennsylvania, while in the House, Republicans are close to securing a majority, with Mike Johnson possibly taking over as Speaker of the House with Trump’s support.
Trump won a total of 312 electoral college votes to Kamala Harris’ 226. In addition to Arizona, he emerged victorious in other swing states and important industrial regions such as Nevada, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. The party also regained control of the Senate and maintains an advantage in the Chamber of Representatives.
After an election marked by strong polarization, the Republican victory poses a challenge to the Democratic Party to reevaluate its platform. Trump also won a majority in the popular vote, the first Republican to do so since George W. Bush in 2004.
Biden invited Trump to a formal meeting in the Oval Office, a transition tradition that Trump rejected in 2020. The current president has promised to dedicate himself to a peaceful and orderly transition of power. However, some documents needed for the transition have not yet been sent to Biden’s team, including essential ethics agreements to avoid conflicts of interest.
Jake Sullivan, national security adviser, announced that Biden will discuss foreign policies with Trump, with an emphasis on support for Ukraine and the need to increase pressure on Hamas to negotiate a deal in Gaza.
Frank Luntz, a Republican consultant, criticized Harris’ campaign strategy, and Bernie Sanders defended Harris, emphasizing the discontent of the working class.
The victory also reignited debates among Republicans about the legitimacy of the elections, with Jim Jordan celebrating Trump’s return as “the greatest political comeback in history.” Jordan and Barry Loudermilk called for the preservation of records of investigations against Trump, while Byron Donalds refuted rumors of an “enemies list,” attributing them to a false Democratic narrative.
