Chancellor Olaf Scholz faces confidence vote in December; SPD and CDU approve plan that anticipates political decision in Germany
The chancellor’s party Olaf Scholzos Social Democrats (SPD)and the Christian Democrats (CDU) of the opposition agreed that February 23 will be the date of early elections in Germany.
A spokesperson for CDU confirmed that the parties proposed the date together, but highlighted that it will be up to the president of Germany schedule the vote. βHe alone decides in the endβ, stated the spokesperson.
According to the plan approved by the SPD and by CDUthe two largest parties in the Bundestag, Scholz will present a vote of confidence on December 16according to a person familiar with the matter.
Scholz had originally proposed file the vote of confidence for January 15th and hold elections in March. However, the CDU opposed it, arguing that an earlier election was necessary to avoid a long period of uncertainty.
