During the Airshow China 2024held in Zhuhai, Beijing revealed the concept of GDF-600a hypersonic glide vehicle designed for high-speed, multi-role operations.
Developed by Guangdong Aerodynamics Research Academy (GARA)o GDF-600 is highlighted by its ability to reach speeds of up to Mach 7 (approximately 8,500 km/h) and a maximum flight range of 600 km.
The GDF-600 can carry a variety of submunitions, including supersonic missiles, drones and roving munitions, totaling up to 1.2 tons in payload.
This new weapon could pose a significant challenge to the defensive capabilities of Taiwan and the United States in the Pacific region, given its potential for rapid and precise strikes on multiple targets.
The War Zone portal, which covered the event, points out that the GDF-600 can not only carry out kinetic and electronic warfare attacks, but is also capable of carrying out reconnaissance missions, increasing its operational versatility.
The vehicle’s ability to launch submunitions mid-flight is a notable technical advancement, although it still presents significant challenges due to the high speeds involved.
If developed and deployed, the GDF-600 could considerably bolster China’s hypersonic arsenal, with important implications for regional security, especially in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.
