The Brazilian government is alert to the possibility of Donald Trump resuming the presidency of the United States, a situation that could reignite tensions between the two countries, as reported by the Sheet. This concern arises in the context of the upcoming American elections, where the former Republican president presents himself as a candidate again.

In a recent statement, the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvaexpressed support for Kamala Harriscurrent vice president of the USA, mentioning his preference due to his opposition to the advancement of extremist ideologies.

Lula even linked a possible election of Trump with a resurgence of global authoritarian movements.

“As I am a lover of democracy, I think it is the most sacred thing that we humans can build to govern our country well. Obviously, I’m rooting for Kamala to win the elections,” said Lula.

One of the main potential points of conflict, if Trump is elected, would be environmental cooperation. During his previous term, Trump withdrew the US from the Paris Agreement and openly supported the fossil fuel industry.

A new Trump presidency could mean continued blocking of vital funds for Brazil, such as the Amazon Fund, especially if the US Congress is under Republican control.

Another delicate issue is the influence of Elon Musk, who has been an ally of Trump and has recently had disagreements with Brazilian authorities. The president of the Brazil Institute, Bruna Santos, warns of possible complications.

“There are efforts in the US Congress to question Brazil about alleged violations of freedom of expression, and this should gain strength with Trump,” explained Santos, indicating possible negative repercussions for Brazilian diplomacy.

In the geopolitical sphere, Trump’s re-election could also reconfigure alliances in Latin America. Analysts point out that Trump may seek new regional allies, such as Argentina’s Javier Milei and El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele, which could reduce the influence of political figures such as former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro.

Regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Trump has already expressed intentions to reduce US military and financial support for the country, which is in line with the Brazilian position in favor of peace negotiations. However, this could entail a more aggressive American foreign policy in the Middle East, potentially encouraging Israeli actions against Gaza and Lebanon.

Faced with these scenarios, Brazilian diplomacy adopts a pragmatic stance, maintaining open dialogue channels with both candidates until the election results are definitive. In the event of Kamala Harris’ victory, Brazil expects a continuation of Biden’s policies, with a dialogue more aligned with democratic and environmental values.
