Deutsche Telekom, Europe’s largest telecom company, is taking a groundbreaking step into the world of Bitcoin mining. In a recently announced project called “Digital Monetary Photosynthesis,” the company is using excess renewable energy to mine Bitcoin. This green approach gives new impetus to the adoption of cryptocurrency and contributes to sustainable energy management.
Project in collaboration with ‘Bankhaus Metzler’
The project will be implemented by Deutsche Telekom subsidiary MMS in collaboration with Bankhaus Metzler and will be located in Backnang, Germany. On the site of facade manufacturer Riva, the Bitcoin mining installations will run on renewable energy sources that would otherwise remain unused. Metis Solutions will be responsible for managing the mining facilities, according to the announcement on November 11.
According to Oliver Nyderle, head of Digital Trust and Web3 Infrastructure at Deutsche Telekom MMS, the project is in line with the need to improve the stability of the electricity grid as renewable energy sources, such as wind, play a greater role. “Bitcoin mining can help smooth out fluctuations in the grid by converting excess energy into digital value,” Nyderle explains.
In addition to the mining facility, Bankhaus Metzler is exploring innovative financial services with digital assets, demonstrating that the project extends beyond Bitcoin mining. These applications show how blockchain technology can contribute to sustainable and social solutions.
City heated by recycled heat
In Finland, a city of more than 11,000 inhabitants is now heated with recycled heat from Bitcoin mining platforms, as part of a pilot project by Marathon Digital Holdings. This project, called ‘district heating’, shows the possibilities of sustainable district heating based on excess heat from mining installations.
With this step, Deutsche Telekom proves that it wants to be at the forefront of both technological and sustainable innovations within the crypto world. The project reflects a vision in which blockchain technology and sustainability go hand in hand and potentially offers a glimpse into the future of the crypto market.
