PLA exercises intensify pressure against ‘Taiwan independence’
The recent military exercises conducted by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) around Taiwan Island on Monday are not mere repetitions of previous maneuvers. According to the Ministry of National Defense, these exercises aim to intensify pressure on the forces seeking “Taiwan independence”. The statement was made in response to Taiwanese regional leader Lai Ching-te’s provocative speech on Thursday.
Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian emphasized that every provocation by Taiwan’s pro-independence forces will be responded to by the PLA with further actions, until the Taiwan issue is completely resolved. Wu criticized figures like Lai for trying to sever historical ties and incite hostility between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. He described Lai as a “destroyer of cross-strait peace” and “crisis creator”, highlighting that such attitudes will not be tolerated and will be duly addressed.
Wu reaffirmed the position that Taiwan is a sacred territory of China, with a clear historical context and international recognition that the island has never been, nor will be, an independent country. He argued that provocations by the Taiwan Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and foreign interference are the main causes of instability in the region.
The PLA’s current exercises are aimed directly at separatist “Taiwan independence” forces. Wu said the quest for independence is a “dead end” but emphasized that the exercises are not a threat to the Taiwanese people. He reiterated China’s commitment to seeking peaceful reunification, but without renouncing the use of force if necessary.
Wu also highlighted that the Taiwan issue is an internal matter for China, which will not accept external interference. He urged all parties to cease support for “Taiwan independence” and stop harming peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. For him, China’s reunification is an unshakable national duty and an inevitable historical trend.
