O United States Department of Commerce is expected to announce on Monday a proposed ban on Chinese software and hardware in connected and autonomous vehicles operating on the country’s roads, citing national security concerns.

According to sources from Reutersthe decision aims to prevent risks associated with data collection by Chinese companies and the possibility of foreign manipulation in navigation systems and vehicles connected to the internet.

The proposed new regulations will include a ban on the import and sale of vehicles from China that integrate critical communications, or automated driving system software or hardware.

The sources, who requested anonymity due to the lack of public disclosure of the measure, indicate a significant increase in United States restrictions on access to Chinese products in the automotive sector.

This move follows a series of restrictive measures by the Biden administration, including the substantial increase in tariffs on Chinese imports last week, which imposed a 100% tax on electric vehicles, as well as hikes in tariffs on batteries and essential minerals.
